Really new to this sort of thing and struggling to find something positive.
My Mams in the process of being diagnosed with either kidney or stomach cancer after developing ascites suddenly a few weeks ago. There’s been no formal diagnosis but she’s been told that she probably won’t make it to treatment which has come as a bit of a shock. Despite her being in hospital she’s still her usual self.
Is there any helpful steps I should take to get through it? I’ve not cried or got upset you but I’m getting very impatient and frustrated with things that wouldn’t usually affect me.
Hi Rob_d and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I’m really sorry to read that your mum isn't able to have treatment and I can understand what a shock this must have been to hear.
The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the supporting someone with incurable cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others in a similar situation as yourself.
To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
Sending ((hugs))
My Mum was taken to hospital in June of this year due to jaundice and a week later was told it was terminal cancer. I lost her 6 weeks later. In those rapid last weeks of her life I put everything about my life on hold and became the best daughter I could be. She came home to pass. I was positive to her, talked normally and when she would sleep sob silently so she wouldn’t hear me. It was very very hard at the end. Watching Mum disappear was awful, I lost her 4 weeks before she passed really. What helped me was being at her side, being the strong one when I could see she was trying to be the strong one for me. Telling her over and over how much she meant to me, all while trying to pretend we both didn’t know she was going to die. I’m so sorry you are going through this, I hope I have helped if only in a small way. Reaching out and finding those who are going through the same situation will help, feeling so desperate, scared and so unbelievably sad is a journey you don’t have to face alone.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
