Brachytherapy

Hi I am new here and wanted to know more about peoples experiences of brachytherapy as adjuvant therapy after a hysterectomy.

I had a total hysterectomy in September for stage 1 endometrial cancer. Everything removed and lymph nodes clear but had clear cell cancer which can be more aggressive.

I saw an oncology radiologist this week who has strongly advised 3 sessions of brachytherapy to stop reoccurrence of the cancer.

I have agreed to this but reading about it I am not sure especially regarding the tube being put into my vagina as I already have vaginal atrophy from menopause.

Thank you

  • Hi Adele

It would be great to share experiences.

I hope I hear as quickly as you. I was told that since womb cancer Brachytherapy is much easier than Cervical cancer one you tend to get arranged quickly

How many weeks post surgery are you . I will be 4 weeks on Friday so little concerned not fully healed yet.

  • Hi there

I was 9 weeks post op yesterday. I feel as though usually it's done between 6-8 weeks so I am a little late but the hospital that I am at said they have a waiting list.

In a couple of weeks you will be 6 weeks and I am sure you will be healed by then.

It's nerve wracking isn't it but we will be fine.

I will keep in touch and let you know how I get on next week. Xx

  • Hi there

    How are you doing?

I had my first brachytherapy session today and it was actually fine. The tube was no problem at all and the actual treatment was done in 10 minutes.

Have you heard about your treatment starts date yet?

I have 2 more treatments this Thursday and next Tuesday.

It really isn't anything to worry about. The radiologist said that the side effects to the bladder and bowel are minimal but there will be some fatigue.

    Take care. Xx

  • Hi

Still no word on dates for my treatment. Will call the cancer nurse if don’t hear soon .

It is so good to hear that your treatment went well that really puts my mind at rest.

Please keep me updated on how the treatments go.

How was the initial set up, did that take very long?

    Thinking of you x

  • Hi

Had my second brachytherapy session yesterday. The treatment itself is painless.

Yesterday as I left the hospital I felt a little crampy and then later on in the afternoon felt slightly nauseous.

This morning still feel a little sickly but other than that ok.

Have you heard yet about your treatment start date.

    Thinking of you. Xx

  • Hi Adele, well done for being two thirds of the way through! Are you having a snack and a drink immediately after treatment? If not that may help.

  • Hi there

Yes yesterday I was craving a Greggs steak bake so my hubby took me straight to a Greggs shop!

It was very enjoyable but I think the pastry caused some indigestion, but it was worth it.

Hope you are feeling ok 3 years on?

I had a chat with the nurse re the dilators, did you manage ok with them?

    Thank you for responding. Xx

  • Hi

Still no date for me yet. I did speak to the Cancer Specialist nurse yesterday and she said would chase for me if not heard by today.

I am five weeks today post op today. The nurse said probably week 8 to start but it would be really good to get a date so I can plan. Husband and I would really like to book a holiday once my treatment is all over.

Hope your symptoms ease soon and just think only one more to go now!

Keep us updated on how you are getting on it is really good to hear from someone going through this now.

    Take care xxx

  • Hi

Just wanted to update as my dates have come through 30th December,6th Jan and 13th Jan. It is good to get some dates.

    Adele how are you doing?
is your treatment all over now?

  • Hi there

I am so glad you have your dates through now.

Please don't worry about it, I found it absolutely fine.

The tube inserted into the vagina wasn't uncomfortable at all, the radiologists were all lovely and the treatment is over and done within 10 mins.

I only had a small pinkish show after the first treatment, nothing since.

I am finding that I feel nauseous but it's manageable, also had some slight cramping again after my 3rd session on Tuesday but that has eased.

The radiologist said that some fatigue could start over the next couple of weeks but will eventually leave.

Overall though I found it all ok.

I hope that reassures you and you can enjoy Christmas before your treatment starts, you will be absolutely fine.

I was given the dilators and told to start using them at around 5-6 weeks after treatment has ended.

Let me know how you get on.

    Take care. Xx
