Worried about waiting times for procedure under GA

Hi Everyone,

I've been lurking here for a few weeks and I firstly wanted to say that this is such a lovely and supportive group!

A quick summary, I've had three episodes of post menopausal bleeding with the last one being quite concerning (mid Sept 25). I went to the GP who did an examination and found a very large cervical polyp at the top of the cervix, she referred me to colposcopy and for an urgent ultrasound which I ended up having the following day which showed a thickened endometrium (8mm). I was scheduled for colposcopy on the 3rd October and hysteroscopy on the 8th October however following the colposcopy I was told that the polyp would need to be removed by general anaesthetic and I would have a D and C and hysteroscopy at the same time, I was also told that they were unsure if the polyp was coming from the womb itself and had grown down which really worried me.

Fast forward to today I still dont have an appointment for these procedures and I'm really worried that time is ticking on, I have a family history of endometrial and bowel cancer although the consultant didnt seem concerned about this.

I have had the pre-op (23rd October) but no date yet and I'm just worried about the timings for all of this, I know that waiting lists are very long but I feel perhaps that I should have had this done at this stage and I have no idea how long pre-ops are valid for. I've phoned the consultants secretary to politely ask if a date was known but 3 phone calls and messages later I've heard nothing back.

I'm normally a pretty calm person and I hate making a fuss but just wondering if these timescales are normal?

thanks all for any advice on this :)

  • 8 mm is concerning but mine was 11-13mm. I had my large polyp removed today with local anaesthetic and gas and air. I didnt want to wait for the GA. It was considerably less traumatic than I'd feared, the local being injected the worst part. Did they give you a choice? I actually wish I'd just tried gas and air but locals dont work well for me and gas and air does.

If you are not getting a response to messages involve PALS. They vary in quality but my local one got me not only an answer but a date when my husband was waiting for a much needed procedure. You could also try asking your gp to chase but ours would be useless for that.

Most polyps are actually benign. I'm quite old and have risk factors and I've still been told 70% chance no further action needed after the polyp is gone and 30% chance of progesterone (they prefer coil, I'd ask for tablets) or a hysterectomy.

  • Hi

Thanks so much for your response. I wasn't given a choice about having it done under GA and would have preferred not to as I had a bit of an issue with a GA following another procedure 10 years ago. At the colposcopy was told that it wouldn't be possible to remove polyp under local because of size and location and they cancelled the planned hysteroscopy when I was there. I was told last week of Oct or first week November but I know there will be more urgent cases. Hopefully will have a date soon and I hope your results all go well.

  • Hi greygirl

    Welcome to the Womb group.

I am sorry to hear of your episodes of bleeding and the discovery of a polyp.

I understand why you are concerned about waiting and how frustrating it is not to get a response from the hospital.

With any post menopausal bleeding it is normal to be put on the urgent pathway. The first step is the ultrasound that you have had. Because hyperplasia ( a thickened lining) was found then the hysteroscopy/biopsy is the normal next step. There are different types of hyperplasia and some are more concerning than others. Some types of hyperplasia may need some treatment whereas others may only require monitoring.

Due to the position of the polyp it seems reasonable that they want to do the procedures together and under general anaesthetic. It may well be that due to the size and position of the polyp that they would not be able to get a clear view with the hysteroscope and may not be able to take the needed endometrial biopsies. When the polyp is removed it will also be sent for testing.

I wonder if it is worth contacting your GP and asking whether they can directly contact the hospital for an update. Mine did this for me after I had my diagnosis and was waiting for surgery to be arranged. I was given an appointment the following day (a Friday) and had my surgery the following Monday.

  • hi Jane,

thank you so much for your reply that helps a lot and makes complete sense. to be honest everything happened so quickly and when I had the colposcopy I didnt get much information only that they wouldn't be able to remove the polyp that way and that it would need a GA but the information was quite limited. Its probably my own fault as I'm not very good at asking about anything medical related and I should have asked for more detail at the time.

They have actually just phoned me and put me through to the waiting list office, no-one there so I've left a message!

thanks so much for taking the time to reply, I can see all the other help you have given to the other ladies on here.

    thank you

  • Hi Everyone,

thank you all for your help. I actually got a call today and will be having my procedures next week on the 12th, I'll update everyone on how it goes and thank you Slight smile

  • Great news- in my experience there is often lots of things going on behind the scenes and they just don't always communicate that- hence all the waiting and worrying. I suppose for them its all routine but for us its a big thing.

    Good luck for next week.

thank you much I will let everyone know how everything works out. The person that called said there had been a bit of an issue with the lists and it should have been all done by now. Never mind very happy to have a date and hopefully find out what is going on.
