Hello, I’m 53, post menopausal & had on & off bleeding since Dec, which I went to Gp with, had ultrasound & transvaginal on 15th April, apparently endometrial 7mm thickness so told that I would have urgent gynaecologist referral, I’ve just had letter today with an appointment for 20th May - which is longer than I expected to be honest, the letter gives little detail but I think Im to undergo a biopsy not sure about hysteroscopy as this isn’t mentioned in the letter
just posting as I have no-one else to discuss with & felt this would be the right place
Hi, you can have an ultrasound and a biopsy. Not everyone has the hysteroscopy. I didn't- partly because I was bleeding and they would not get a clear picture and partly because it is not always needed. The hysteroscopy is just to have a look at the womb lining and if something is already picked up on an ultrasound then there is no need. My consultant said because there was something seen they would just take the biopsy. Where there is perhaps doubt about what is going on or if they are just investigating then a hysteroscopy may be needed but not everyone will have it.
Hi LolaBear - the thought of having a 'local anaesthetic' down there fills me with horror. I was already feeling very low and now I feel as though I have had an idea put in my head about cancer when I am not even post menopausal and feel even worse. I will be keeping the appointment but only to confirm that I don't need to have any procedures. As a result of all of this I was told a couple of days ago that my repeat prescription for my hrt patches had been questioned and would have to be reviewed by a GP - they weren't even going to tell me. So, instead of preparing for my new job which I start on Monday, I have spent the last three days on the phone to the surgery, making last minute appointments to find out what on earth is going on while clutching my last three patches and finally being told that they would let me have it. I don't understand why there is such a grey area wit post menopausal bleeding at the same time as being so rigid about it being 12 months! It's confusing and misleading.
Hi Georgia
I would feel the same about the local anaesthetic.
They can use something called Instilagel - which is an antiseptic and numbing gel.
There is also a spray numbing agent they can use. I remember my practice nurse telling me. This can be use before or instead of an injection.
I am sorry that you are feeling so low and can understand your frustration with all of this. Do give the Support Line a call if you need to.
Jane
I understand how you feel. I felt exactly the same before I had my tests. I resisted it with such ferocity and didn't even want any tests at all. I have fibromyalgia, which means that I have a very low pain threshold and any pain is magnified for me. I can't even stand labels rubbing on my neck as the fibro affects all my nerves.
And yet I have had the local anaesthetic into my cervix 3 times now. Also a hysteroscopy and 3 biopsies - against all odds really. Jane is correct - you can have numbing gel before you have the jab - and you can have the gas & air before you have the injection too. The gas and air kind of numbs everything and helps you totally relax and kind of rise above it all. I know it's scary and believe me, I didn't think I could cope with any of this myself but somehow I did.
WIth the help of kindly staff, my husband holding my hand - and the gel, gas & air, local anaesthetic I did all these things I thought I could never do.
The whole procedure lasted less than 10 minutes and now I am so glad that others perservered with me, otherwise heaven knows where I would be without any treatment now.
Apologies if if I misunderstood. They ususally tell you if you are having a hysteroscopy but I would still call the hospital to find out whether I was having just the biopsy, just in case. Good luck!
