Atypical hyperplasia

Hi, I am newly diagnosed with atypical hyperplasia I had an appointment today where the gynaecologist discussed if it wasn't for my age I would of been offered a hysterectomy. (I'm 29 no children).

I am currently taking 30mg provera but I am going to change to the coil when I get my polyps removed as there is less side effects.

Are the polyps something to worry about if I have atypical hyperplasia ?

My main question to her was if the coil doesn't seem to work at what point do they decide that? How many 3 monthly biopsies would I need before they say this isn't working you will need a hysterectomy, which she didn't really answer and said it would depend on each result.

I'd love to have kids but am I just prolonging something that is eventually going to have to happen anyway.

And how effective is the coil/provera normally? Does the hyperplasia tend to clear up with this treatment.

Thankyou

  • Hi Missaurora,

I know it is a worrying time. I had aytipical hyperplasia about 8 years ago. I didn’t want the hysterectomy as I had just had a knee replacement and didn’t want another major operation immediately. I was 67 at the time. Provera was very effective for me with no noticeable side effects. I had biopsies at 3 months and then every 6 months for 2 years. The abnormal cells were gone after the first 3 months. The only mistake in my treatment I think was to not stay on the Provera after the 2 years. So last year I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer grade 1 stage 1A. Now not really suitable for the operation but am being treated with a stronger dose of Provera and my first 3 month biopsy shows ‘no malignancy at present’. So, in short, if you want to have children give the Provera/coil at least 6 months and if it works go back and have the hysterectomy when you have completed your family.

    Best wishes to you.

  • Hey holly75

Thankyou for your reply. Sounds like a lot you've been through. Hope your OK and managing fine.

And thanks for the feedback regarding the provera/coil Sounds like it could be promising. It's all the waiting around that's the worste bit

    Kind regards x

  • Hi Missaurora.

I had Mirena coil but had it removed after it caused painful ovarian cysts.

It was not an easy decision as the coil had thinned my womb thickening and bleeding well. Just a short time after removal the thickening returned.

I was on a mix of 3 and 6 month reviews.

  • Hi CrumpetsOrToast, thankyou for your response.

The coil does sound promising for treatment but from the other response I've had aswel it does not seem like it is a long term fix.

I will just have to hope and pray everything will be fine and go with it.

    Thankyou
