Hi, I am newly diagnosed with atypical hyperplasia I had an appointment today where the gynaecologist discussed if it wasn't for my age I would of been offered a hysterectomy. (I'm 29 no children).
I am currently taking 30mg provera but I am going to change to the coil when I get my polyps removed as there is less side effects.
Are the polyps something to worry about if I have atypical hyperplasia ?
My main question to her was if the coil doesn't seem to work at what point do they decide that? How many 3 monthly biopsies would I need before they say this isn't working you will need a hysterectomy, which she didn't really answer and said it would depend on each result.
I'd love to have kids but am I just prolonging something that is eventually going to have to happen anyway.
And how effective is the coil/provera normally? Does the hyperplasia tend to clear up with this treatment.
Thankyou
Hi Missaurora,
I know it is a worrying time. I had aytipical hyperplasia about 8 years ago. I didn’t want the hysterectomy as I had just had a knee replacement and didn’t want another major operation immediately. I was 67 at the time. Provera was very effective for me with no noticeable side effects. I had biopsies at 3 months and then every 6 months for 2 years. The abnormal cells were gone after the first 3 months. The only mistake in my treatment I think was to not stay on the Provera after the 2 years. So last year I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer grade 1 stage 1A. Now not really suitable for the operation but am being treated with a stronger dose of Provera and my first 3 month biopsy shows ‘no malignancy at present’. So, in short, if you want to have children give the Provera/coil at least 6 months and if it works go back and have the hysterectomy when you have completed your family.
Best wishes to you.
Hey holly75
Thankyou for your reply. Sounds like a lot you've been through. Hope your OK and managing fine.
And thanks for the feedback regarding the provera/coil Sounds like it could be promising. It's all the waiting around that's the worste bit
Kind regards x
Hi Missaurora.
I had Mirena coil but had it removed after it caused painful ovarian cysts.
It was not an easy decision as the coil had thinned my womb thickening and bleeding well. Just a short time after removal the thickening returned.
I was on a mix of 3 and 6 month reviews.
Hi CrumpetsOrToast, thankyou for your response.
The coil does sound promising for treatment but from the other response I've had aswel it does not seem like it is a long term fix.
I will just have to hope and pray everything will be fine and go with it.
Thankyou
Hi
I am in the same boat as you but a bit more severe
I am 29 years old as well and I was told atypical hyperplasia. On further examination they said I have endometrial cancer stage 1 grade 1. I am currently on Provera 600mg. I was previously given 400mg but the bleeding was still there so doctor increased dose to 600mg.
I am due for another biopsy in end of Feb and will also get mirena coil fitted. It will be additional to the medicine.
I will be up for biopsies every 3 months. I also do not have kids yet and wish to preserve fertility so I sincerely hope the meds work for me. Once it is all clear, they will do fertility treatment but I reckon it will be long before that happens.
Hi thanks for sharing, what did they do further to discover the stage 1 cancer ? And how are you finding the provera I'm only on 30mg and find it makes me feel very down and have extreme anxiety.
I hope your OK tho must of been a shock and very scary to hear. Can I ask was you getting any pain? I'm suffering with period like cramps at the minute and it's worrying.
I've got my polyp removal on Friday and coil fitting so another anxious wait for the polyp results.
I hope everything goes well for you and fingers crossed got clear results
Hi Missaurora, I hope everything goes well for you today. They did MRI and further examination of same biopsy samples when they came to this conclusion.
I think the medicine is making me weak like I do not feel any energy at all. I do not feel enthusiasm about doing anything. But yes, I do get random cramps sometimes but it is not continous.
I pray yours is just thickening of wall and nothing malign and meds and coil works its charm.
Hi, I have a Mirena coil. I am older than you and post menopausal. I was told that there is up to 50% chance of the coil working and reversing my stage 1 EC. However, there too many variables to be sure when the coil would be removed etc....so they can't tell you what lies ahead really. Everyone is different.
In my case, I will have my first follow-up and another biopsy since having the coil in 5 weeks time. My consultant said that there are several result outcomes then:
Stable, progressing (getting worse) or resolving. Some women have good results with this method after 6 months or so and some even after 3 months but you will have to wait and see. The hormone route is worth a try, particularly if you want children.. Good wishes.
Good luck for your next biopsy. I do tend to see that the coil is pretty effective so fingers crossed all goes well. It's just constant waiting isn't it for the next appointment/biopsy then waiting again for the results it never stops and your mind never gets a rest. But we've got to stay positive.
I had a few polyps removed yesterday which I was told would more than likely come back the same as my biopsy hyperlasia with atypia. However he was confident that the removal of my polyps could resolve the issue of the endometrial hyperlasia so we will just have to see.
Hopefully there is nothing more sinister within the polyps. 4 - 6 weeks for the results, and another 3 month wait for my next biopsy.
Wishing you all the best
