Hi I am Sara. I am 56 years old and found out I have uterine cancer 9 days ago. I get the results of by CT and MRI scans tomorrow. I am very fortunate to have private health insurance through my employer. Right now I am just very scared. It almost seems unreal. I felt I was going through the motions to get my bleeding checked out. I don't think I was anticipating it being cancer. Wishing everyone positivity and the best outcome.

  • There’s a nerve that runs up from diaphragm to the shoulder that is often triggered due to the gas they pump into your abdomin during surgery. Apparently shoulder pain is really common because of this, and sleeping weirdly doesn’t help! I also read that it’s actually best to avoid too much fibre for the first day or two as it can actually cause more bloating. It’s a balance.

Did you have a spine block? I did and that can lead to a sluggish bowel for a few days!

Speaking from one day in the future Stuck out tongue winking eye you might find today is not great but my today, your tomorrow, is so much better. Like the wind it will eventually pass!

  • Glad to hear that you had your hysterectomy. Trapped wind and sluggish bowels are quite normal following surgery. Things will get back to normal fairly quickly. Have you had oxygen? I ended up having one of those little nose things. I had some breathing issues post Covid so was getting my stats done with instructions to breathe deeply.

  • Hi Robot xxx,

    How are you feeling?

I can't believe it's already 5 days since my surgery!

I haven't needed any painkillers today so I am looking on that as a positive.

I hope you are recovering well.

    Sara

  • I’m down to just one painkiller before bed, not sure if I even need it but it helps knock me out! The worst pain has been from sleeping weird and getting a crick in my neck! I’m starting to have a hard time doing little especially cause I don’t feel bad. I’m getting cabin fever. Tomorrow will be a whole week since surgery and I’m treating myself to supermarket shop, rock and roll!

  • Ha ha Robot xxx,

Indeed a supermarket shop is the way to go!! Remember no heavy lifting!

I too am bored. I never thought I would be, but I am. It's frustrating. There are so many productive things I could be doing e.g. gardening which are just a no no.

Are you planning on driving soon?

    Sara

  • Hope the supermarket shop goes well. I imagine you have someone else to pack and carry the bags and load the car? Nothing heavier than a mug of coffee is the safest for now for you lifting.

  • Husband is being very cautious with me, making sure I didn’t carry anything or reach too high. He does most of the housework anyway so no change there. It was nice to be out and about. I am noticing the lower energy levels, I’m definitely getting tired quicker. Finding it easier to relax now I’ve done something. And no driving yet, my hips are a little achy still and a although I’m hardly taking the pain meds as I am still on the inhixta and that makes me a little light headed.

Waiting for the pathology results is starting to cause an undercurrent. Once that’s over and hopefully clear I’ll feel so much better. The incision at my navel is very sore and quite red but not hot and no discharge, I think the stitches are irritating the wound.

  • Avocado, just to make sure you’re aware that after a hysterectomy we shouldn’t be driving until our consultant says it’s safe to do so. The anaesthetic effects need to be fully out of our systems and we need to be alert/sharp and also fit enough to be able to do an emergency stop, so it’s best to err on the side of caution. If we drive before the consultant says we are fit to do so, and have an accident, our insurance company may say we’re not insured…

  • Robot, re your belly button - I found that it helped to do a quick gentle wipe with a cotton bud dipped in salt water (as advised by my CNS)

  • Thanks, yes I read that somewhere. I wasn’t given much information on discharge so have had to do my own research! I remember when I had my navel peirced and it got a bit nasty that soaking it in salt water was the best thing! I lossened one of the stitched that was really hurting and put some sticky sutures on instead and that has helped.
