Hi I am Sara. I am 56 years old and found out I have uterine cancer 9 days ago. I get the results of by CT and MRI scans tomorrow. I am very fortunate to have private health insurance through my employer. Right now I am just very scared. It almost seems unreal. I felt I was going through the motions to get my bleeding checked out. I don't think I was anticipating it being cancer. Wishing everyone positivity and the best outcome.
Hi the hysterectomy went ahead on Wednesday evening. The consultant was pleased with how it went. I am still in hospital because I did not feel confident enough/well enough to go home. I also have really painful trapped wind. How did others deal with this problem? Now my Sat's are down because I am not breathing deeply enough due to the pain from the trapped wind.
Hi Avocado, well done for having had your op! I’m sorry you haven’t yet felt confident enough to go home - what specifically is worrying you? Hopefully you’re up and about and walking around the ward and corridors - that in itself should help get things moving, as will a light diet. Some find peppermint tea helpful or peppermint oil in hot water.
Yes MarmiteFan59. I think it's partly because my surgery was late and I was still having my Obs done at 1.30am. The nurse kept coming into my room every 30 mins after that and then came in to fill in forms at 05.15am. I am so tired. Yes I am walking down corridors but have no energy. I am going home tomorrow.
I spent one night on the ward and it was awful. Every time In was just dropping off I was woken up. One if the nurses injected a minuscule amount of air into my iv when priming the line in the middle of the night and It hurt so much and then I had a massive anxiety attack cause she kept insisting she hadn’t even though I very clearly saw the admittedly small bubbles and what with the lack of sleep and stress In though I was going to die! Drama queen much! I was so tired and ragged by the time I got home. But feeling so much better today. I’m sore and beat up but feeling happier.
But OMG the bloating yesterday, I looked 8mths pregnant. Peppermint tea and capsules really helped. Walking helped. And if you can manage it doing some gentle exercises like small hula hoop movements. The one that really helped me was holding onto the kitchen counter and bending forward at the waist and then gently rotating my hips. If you Google bloating hysterectomy exercises there are some videos. But the thing that really worked the best was a glycerine suppository, but that did make me cramp a little bit worth it in the end (no pun intended).
Today is all about neck and shoulder pain (heat pad is helping) which is distracting me from my tummy feeling like a punch bag. But weirdly the soreness feels like healing so mentally that helps!
Am glad that your have had the hysterectomy and hopefully today you will feel up to going home. When I had mine I was still having the obs done throughout the night and catheter was taken out 4 30am- I didn't get much sleep as they were in and out of the room all night and I could hear others. I was lucky in that I was in a room on my own. In the end I got up at 530 and went for a walk. The wind is not great and it can take a few days to settle. From what I remember they put air into your tummy during the op to get a better view. I did try peppermint capsules when I got home but to be honest moving around was the best thing and starting to eat again and regularly. It was uncomfortable though and is common. If it doesnt ease then give your team a call and they may be able to give you something to help it disperse.
Hi Robotxxx, Good to hear from you. Thank you for responding. I can see we have experienced similar problems! While I am sorry you are suffering, its good to know what I am experiencing is normal. I'm going home today. Lots of sleep and recuperation. Have a good Friday and weekend.
Yes, I found it a real effort to begin with but my surgeon said it can take a few days as you are on a head down position during surgery for several hours. He said you sort of are stiff from that plus also nervous about moving in case it hurts. I found that to begin with for each hour I was sat down, I tried to get up and potter around in the house for 5-10 minutes. I built up on this and then had a wander around my garden on the 2nd day. But I did rest a lot and your body will let you know if you do too much. Even just standing up and having a stretch will help. I don't remember why but I was told that sometimes you can feel the trapped wind around your shoulder and I used to do stretches and put my arms above my head. Light meals too, and nothing to cause any more wind helped.
