Hello.

I'm feeling rather worried and just wanted to ask opinions on here.

I'm 68 years old and had a brown vaginal discharge last September on just one occasion. I tied to just pass it off at the time as it was only briefly on one afternoon and after I'd had a flare up of my ibs.
As my husband has prostate cancer I've tried not to dwell on this symptom of mine.....possibly thinking it was something like vaginal atrophy.
This last week though I've felt increasingly unwell and tired and really bad bloating and stomach discomfort which again I've attributed to my ibs.

Yesterday afternoon as I stood up I was aware that I'd has some sort of discharge and on investigation saw a discharge rather like the tail end of a period.

I think this time I must ring the dr? This will obviously have to be tomorrow with it being bank holiday.

Am I being alarmist here?

could vaginal atrophy cause this do you think?

Sorry for all the questions but I've no one else to share with. Many thanks.

  • Hi Gilly, I use Touch ID on my iPad - that way I don’t have to remember the password! The fluid “might” be blood or might be nothing, that’s why they need to check.
At my ultrasound it was noticed that, though it all looked ok, my uterus lining was slightly thicker than it should be post menopause (8mm as opposed to 4mm). So I needed a hysteroscopy. The first one failed as my cervix was too tightly closed, but even without it going through he said he could see I had a very small polyp inside my uterus next to my cervix, and also told me that there was some fluid in my uterus which could be from the polyp “leaking” and that my slight pink spotting may well have been from that. That the reason it was only happening occasionally was that it was building up above the mostly closed cervix then slowly dripping through and taking a while to show. I was then put on the waiting list for a hysteroscopy under GA which took another 3 weeks ish. I have to say that was a wonderful experience, so relaxed and easy. The surgeon removed the polyp and sent it off for analysis. Just over two weeks later I was told by phone that the biopsy had shown cancer, and that it was probably grade 1 stage 1a. I then had an MRI and chest x ray just a few days later, and results from that showed no apparent spread and that a laparoscopic hysterectomy would hopefully sort it without any need for adjuvant treatment (had a face to face appointment for this appointment). I then had an appointment with a new consultant two weeks later (as he was new and had no waiting list) and am due my hysterectomy this coming Saturday. Hope you get your hysteroscopy date soon!

  • If it’s not blood what else could it be?
Thank you for your helpful reply too. X

  • Gilly, I don’t know! I do know that endometrial cancer can present with a watery discharge not necessarily blood. So it does need to be checked out. But I guess could also just be random inner moistness!
