I am 4 days post op and feel - apart from any serious bowel movements...I was passing wind and still am but cannot go to loo. Where I felt little pain post op I am now in agony because I cannot go! Might need to go to the chemist for something at this rate - did anyone e else take anything to get things moving?

Oh poor you. Yes, bunged up bowels was a recurring theme. Awful post surgery and then with each cycle of chemo. It's the painkillers and then the anti emetics. Yes, go to the pharmacist. Good luck! Xxx

  • So sorry to hear about this, constipation can be so painful. I went to the loo 2 days after my op and had no problems but within 3 days of the radiotherapy starting I had the runs and my bowels have never been right since!!! And that was 5 years ago!!

Try prune juice or just drink loads of water but if its getting too bad then a trip to the chemist might be the best thing.

Hope you manage to go soon.

I was given laxido sachets to take home from the hospital and have not had too much of a problem. I seem to get a very low cramping pain when I need to go which so goes away. I am in a little pain which feels like pressure in rectum, seems to ease if I lay on my side. The joys of intimate surgery, I find it difficult when anyone asks how I am, I just want to say its a pain in the arse! but at the moment everyone seems to have lost their sense of humour. I have always been a positive person with an off beat sense of humour which now feel that I have to curb a little ie went to garden centre to buy herbs where my friend questioned why are you buying the large plants instead of the cheaper smaller plants, my reply was you have longer for yours to grow than me, friend then filled up with tears!!!!!

As Phin says it really is a pain in the arse I suffered a lot with constipation and probably more  so because I am rubbish at drinking a lot of fluid, I took Docusate Sodium 100mg tablets they were really good nothing else worked

    Good Luck

    Hi Phin

It's not your problem to 'walk on eggshells'. Just deal with things the best way for you, it's up to others to understand. Humour gets us through a lot, and I always said they may have removed my womb but my humour was left intact. And most of my friends were glad I could joke - it made it easier for them. Maybe you hit a nerve with your friend, and maybe they were tears of joy that you are up and around!

I found stewed apple helped me in the constipation stakes. You'll still have a lot of wind as well, it will go but can be painful.

Enjoy those herbs, hope they go with some lovely cooking.

Thanks for the advice. I have some lovely drinks to get me going but as yet haven't worked!!!

As for the joking Phil,  I would say just be yourself and do anything you need to. This is about you and if you need off - beat humour to deal with this - so  be it. xxx

  • Hi - I didn't manage anything till day 4 (abdominal so still in hosp), had some senna but that did nothing. Surgeon advised suppositories as being gentle but effective and they really do work. Had some difficulty at home so used again - can unblock a "hard plug" that laxatives just don't address. Can be bought cheaply otc in supermarkets etc as constipation relief suppositories (glycerol).

    Good luck!

  • Hi Phin,

Please do try to keep your sense of humour - it will really help you through. As a product of my upbringing in NI, I have a very dry, black humour and it really does help me, though I find a lot of the southern English in my new home find it really odd and just don't know how to react. Cue puzzled faces and unsure grimaces all round as they try to decide whether they are meant to laugh or not! Ah well.

    Onwards and upwards!

    Lots of love,

If you cannot poo, the hospice should not have let you go home! There are tablets to help, but you must consult your hospital Docs/Nurs, as 4 days out, not the norm. Just fight your corner, do not be afraid!

  • Hey

This thread was from 2015. Pretty sure they've pooed since then! Lol
