Hi all, im new here,
Ive just been given the news i have cancerous polyps, they have removed them but i now have to have a hysterectomy, my consultant wants me in by early April, i am having a MRI on my abdomen today so was wondering will my whole body be under the scanner or just up to my chest and does anyone know how long it will take.
Thanks ️
Hi Tigergirl
It’s been a while since I had my MRI but from memory it took around 30 to 45 mins and I think it went just up to my chest. It was noisy but they give you headphones and also a buzzer to press in case you need them. It was an easy procedure although I know some people find it claustrophobic. Hope it goes well for you today!

Head first for me - but (a) the MRI is open at both ends and (b) I wore an eye mask so I didn’t see the machine and just pretended I was in bed or on a beach!
I had an MRI earlier this year and went in feet first, unfortunately I am only short which meant my head had to go inside the tunnel for most of the time and I really struggled with it. I am not normally claustrophobic but felt very restricted and it did cause me anxiety issues. The hospital staff were lovely but it did take over an hour. If you are average height or above it should be less traumatic. Hope you’re doing ok.
Mine.took around 50 minutes and I was completely in the tunnel. As others have said I had headphones as it is very noisy. I found it useful to keep my brain occupied - I counted from 1.to 100 and in reverse in French continuously :). One think I would ask next time is if they could tell you when me how much time is passing eg half way through 10 minutes left etc, good luck I hope it goes well.
Having now had quite a few MRIs I’d totally agree with this - asking to be told when it’s half way through, 10 mins to go, 5 mins to go, really helps. I go through hymns and songs in my mind which are 3-5 mins long to pass the time and divert my mind.
