Increasing heart rate

Hi, I recently had my first chemo, Paclitaxel and Carbonation. The pre chemo infusion had anti sickness, anti histamin and steroids.

So far I have had some minor side effects which are manageable. However an increasing heart rate is my main concern. Before the chemo my average resting heart rate was around 60bpm, after the chemo it's so far increased to around 70bpm. I am still able to do my daily 20 or 30 minutes walks but now with a much higher heart rate whilst my breathing rate is unchanged. I might have to walk much slower. Has anyone had a similar experience? Any advice much appreciated.

  • Hi Puffin

I would advise calling your 24 hour cancer helpline- the number should be on your Sepsis alert card.

This is something that you need to get checked out as chemotherapy can have an effect on the heart. I would expect them to talk to you over the phone, ask some questions and they may suggest you come in and be checked over.

  • Thanks Jane for your reply. I had rang the helpline before I asked for advice here. She said when my resting heart rate is over 100bpm then I need to go to A&E.  She also said my heart rate during walking was high but she questioned the accuracy of my smart watch recording. She said if the recording was correct then I need to go to A&E. After your reply I went to A&E just for a peace of mind. The checkup result shows normal.

By the way, A&E was very busy and I didn't leave until four hours later. Now I need to worry about any infection from the A&E visit. JoySmileyRoflJoyJoy

  • Am glad you went and got checked and all is ok.

If in doubt always give them a call or the Macmillan support line they will tell you what you need to do.

  • HI Puffin,

I'm also an avid fitbit watcher! I love it.

I also found my resting HR went up during treatment,

My consultant wasn't worried and just saiud if resting HR approaches 100 to tell her. Please talk to yours so they can consider it.

It took about 2 months after my last chemo for it to return to near normal.

I think mine goes up whenever I'm taking medication, and then back down after.

I walked my dogs throughtout but I had to listen to my body and yes some days it was a plod rather than the normal pace.

    Good luck with the treatment,

  • Thanks for your reply.

My resting heart rate is still not normal but luckily is within acceptable range. I've been walking slower and also take a short break when I've noticed my heart rate is a bit high.
