4 weeks Post op, appointment coming up - what to expect

Hello,

I had a robotic hysterectomy (ovaries, tubes, cervix, uterus, washings and sentinel node biopsy) on 7/7 and I’m doing well. Walking every day, enjoying my time outside! And starting to do a bit of work every day (and hour or two max).

My histology results were discussed at mdt on Friday and I’m seeing my consultant’s team on Thursday at their normal clinic.
aside from getting the results and next steps (if needed), what else should I expect from that appointment? I.e. will they want to see how the ounces are healing? Do they check the cuff (sorry, got to ask if there’s any kind of internal exam as that’s never been mentioned and Dr. google freaks me out).

Since my diagnosis (June) I came off HRT and am now experiencing the full whammy of menopause symptoms. How have you all dealt with those and where did you go for support? The CNS. The gynae team? Should that be part of the next discussion or am I just getting too far ahead of myself?

I did try searching the forums here, but haven’t yet mastered the search function. It seems to bring up really random stuff.

thank you!

  • Hi DHT240

Am glad that your recovery is going ok.

I was given my post op results by telephone and then called in for an appointment to see the chemo consultant around a week later. I must have been around 4-5 weeks post op.

During that appointment I only had my tummy wounds checked for healing. There was no internal. I had bloods taken and the rest was talking about the chemo.

I think what will happen at the appointment will depend on your post op results. The stage and grade is important but also the sentinel node check. If the node is clear and you have a low grade 1 cancer that is at its earliest stage 1a- sometimes the surgery can be enough. There is likely to be a general discussion about how your recovery is going.

If you need further treatment the appointment would likely to be to discuss which treatment(s) you need, what will happen and discussion about potential side effects. If further treatment is needed I would expect them to check your wounds for healing but not likely to have an internal until treatment has finished. The only exception I can think of is if you need brachytherapy however I would expect the internal check to be done prior to the brachytherapy rather than at the results appointment.

If you go on to have regular check ups then these would usually include an internal each time to check for signs of recurrence.

Hope this helps- good luck for your appointment.

    Jane

  • At my post op review, they didn’t even want to look at scar to see if that was healing as expected. I had abdominal hysterectomy so a long wound! They just asked me how I was, and was told by surgeon I looked really well. he then told me no changes to staging etc, and for me…as I knew I needed further treatment,  the consultant oncologist “happens to be free now so we have arranged for you to see him”.  Think appt with surgeon was about 5 mins.
I then had meeting with oncologist discussed first part of treatment and signed consent forms. I had a CNS with me in both appts, and also had a separate meeting with her, in case there was anything I wanted to discuss.

i went through menopause 10 years ago, and think I was playing “menopause bingo” with all the symptoms, so you have my sympathy. If it was me, I would mention to the CNS, and see if she can help/ point you in right direction.

    good luck for Thursday.

oh and I had my height and weight measured, which they seemed to do at all the early appointments, my height never changed!!

  • 4 weeks after my op ( same as yours) I had an appointment with my oncologist who told me the results of the biopsies taken and the proposed treatment going forward. I did not have an internal at that appointment. I was told I needed chemo and brachytherapy. Good luck with your results.
