Hi there. I have an appointment at the genetics clinic tomorrow and am unsure what to expect. I have already completed my family history and shared this. I’m assuming they will be screening me for Lynch Syndrome due to my Dad (aged 39 brain cancer) and my Sister (aged 48 bowel cancer) having linked cancers. Does this involve a blood test and how long will the results likely take? I’ve been feeling pretty ok until tonight but am now starting to feel anxious about it all. Any advice would be great. Thanks.
Hi I had my bloods taken in the gynae clinic in January and the genetic consultant telephoned me yesterday with the results. So I have never been called into a clinic. I know they take a while as not all hospitals process them and they take longer then normal blood tests.
sorry I can not be any further help.
Hope it goes well
Yes she was lovely and the phone call was not expected. I thought I would be called in to see her.
At my hospital they routinely do a pre-screening for Lynch as part of the post-hysterectomy histology and I got the result (negative) on the phone from my CNS 3-4 weeks post op. They wanted me to be tested for the BRCA gene, so I had a phone consultation with a genetic nurse and then the blood test. Results from that (also negative) took about 6 weeks and again I got those by phone from my CNS.
Hi Sunshine44
My appointment with the geneticist lasted around 45 minutes. Like you I had completed a family history beforehand. The Dr went through all the pros and cons of being screened for Lynch and made sure I understood all the implications. After agreeing to being screened I had a blood test. The results took about 8 weeks to come back. Good luck today.
Linda
Hi Sunshine44
I am also going through Lynch Syndrome testing as my Mum died of bowel cancer 36 years ago so it threw up a red flag even before my hysterectomy. I had blood taken in September and the results came back inconclusive after a few weeks so my genetics team had a meeting with Guys hospital and all my notes have gone to Guys for further investigations but I was warned that it could be months before I hear from them.
Good luck for your tests.

Hi
Its amazing how we are all having different methods regarding Lynch , I do know that we are all tested for Lynch now as our Cancer is a primary flag for it, I had it flagged after a biopsy at the Hysteroscopy stage and after the op my treatment summary said that my tumor showed a loss of expression of MSH6 and this variant was a marker for Lynch Syndrome , my Surgeon told me has referred me to Genetics for Lynch , to my knowledge a blood test has not shown that I have it, my appointment for Genetics is in August when I assume that I will then have a blood test.
My family history is my sister died of Stomach Cancer after having beaten Ovarian Cancer my cousin Bowel Cancer at 45 , I found out at weekend 2 cousins have just been diagnosed with Prostate cancer ( advanced ) both under 50 and another cousin has Stage 4 blood cancer that she is living with and doing well atm , all on my Maternal side, my mum had a hysterectomy quite young so was probably saved from Cancer, so far I am the only one being tested for Lynch as Endometrial cancer is a primary candidate I believe.
I am hoping that its not Lynch and we are just all caught in the new "1 in 2 of you will be diagnosed with cancer " but I wont have an answer for quite a while which is frustrating but its what it is I feel the worst part of my journey is almost over , I start Brachytherapy tomorrow and in 2 weeks time my treatment will be over so I am looking forward to enjoying a worry free summer and will deal with Lynch later this year if needed, if any one else has MSH6 after testing please feel free to update me
Linda
I’m glad your results didn’t take too long to come through. It sounds as though your local hospital are very proactive.
Hi Linda O Sorry to hear so many in your family have been affected by cancer. It does sound like we are all having a very different experience. I was shocked at my appointment today as the counsellor had uncovered way more cases of bowel cancer on the maternal side of my family than I was aware of. Waiting on her looking into my Sister’s tumour biopsies before we progress. I hope everything goes well with your upcoming treatment
