i was examined by a maill dr they was a nurse they but I wasn't told this has anyone else experienced this ? Doreen

  • Hi I had a male doctor for all tests, surgery and follow ups - I didn’t find it an issue. Always a nurse present as well.

  • i wasn't told i was going to be examined by a male dr they was a nurse but sherry i should of been told by letter?

  • I don’t think they need to. I’m wasn’t told beforehand

  • Hi Doreen

You can always ask for a woman if you prefer- however would be best to say so beforehand so it can be organised. You would normally have a chaperone present in any case.

I had a male consultant surgeon, female chemotherapy consultant and a female radiotherapy consultant.

Most nurses on the chemo unit were female but did see a couple of male HCAs. The radiotherapy treatments were carried out by both males and females.

I didn't mind either way but if it does worry you I suggest you speak to your CNS before your next check up and mention you would prefer a woman doctor.

  • Speaking for myself, I’ve always found male GPs, obstetricians and gynaecologists to be more considerate and gentler than female,  A lovely Indian male consultant did my hysteroscopy and he was so sensitive and kind. My surgeon who did my hysterectomy was male too and he was absolutely brilliant.

  • that s nice too here he was gentle but it would of been nice to been told that they were going to exsam me by letting he did say that at the contacen

  • Think it may be worth checking with with your CNS what will happen at future appointments so you’re prepared. I remember asking the consultant when I got results after surgery what would happen next. However I coped by needing to know everything- we all cope in different ways.

  • ok when I was with the nurse after the doctor had gone i said too her is this normal and she said it depends on when I had the op and I said last year and she said that I probably will have more but mabe I will call my cnc nurse and say to about it

  • All my check ups bar the first one have involved an examination; every time they’ve asked “is it ok if we examine you” so I had control, and each time a nurse was present too.
