Any suggestions for pain , had surgery ( laorascopic) on Thursday . A lot of pain in lower abdomen , taking paracetamol every 6 hours as instructed but  not very effective . 2 nights at home have been very uncomfortable tried every combination of pillows etc in bed but finding a good sleeping position nigh on impossible . However the sun is shining and I have opened my bowels and had a shower so onwards and upwards !!

  • Hi did they not give you any stronger pain killers? Mine did but I only used them for a day or so. Is it trapped wind? You could try peppermint tea, that helped for me. It does get easier I promise. I’m nearly at 4 weeks post op now .

  • Hi Rethead

Have a look at your discharge paperwork and there should be a phone number to call. It maybe that you need to be prescribed a slightly stronger pain killer for the next few days.

I found a hot water bottle helped and also sitting on the sofa with my feet up on a footstool with a pillow under my knees. I also found it better if I got up and walked around a bit every hour for 5 minutes or so. I found sitting in one position made me feel stiffer and uncomfortable. I found a pillow behind my lower back helped. I also bought one of the v shaped pillows and used it all the time. I found looser clothes more comfortable and nothing tight around my tummy.

Some ladies can get a fair bit of wind pain as well but this seems to begin to settle once bowels are moving again.

Its very early days still and am sure you will start to feel more comfortable soon.

Give them a call, you need adequate pain relief.

  • No just paracetamol , I’m taking peppermint tea and walking about , it’s a strong period type pain which I’m sure will ease as the days go on

  • Thankyou so much for your kind advice I will see how it goes today and if needed  give them a call

  • Rang through on phone number to be told to contact my GP and  I would have to go to A&E if needed any care as it’s the weekend . Will see how it is tomorrow and can contact my GP .

  • Can always call NHS111 if need advice overnight.

My GP has an answer phone message when it is out of hours- sometimes it says to call another number and sometimes it says to call 111.
