Is the time frame for receiving biopsy results a good indicator of what the results reveal?
ie the longer they take the less chance there is it will be cancer
What have your time lines been like from biopsy to result?
Thanks for any input/advice as always
Nicola
Hi, I haven’t been tested for the same cancer but I’ve had a couple of biopsies and was told that it doesn’t matter how long it takes whether it be quick or slow, this doesn’t determine anything. I’m guessing things like how busy the department is at the time will depend on time frames etc.
My results have taken 2-3 weeks on both biopsies that I’ve had.
When they have done the biopsy, professionals have a meeting (MDT) about the results and discuss the next steps. Each department will have MDT on a certain day so for example, mine was on a Thursday so I knew I wouldn’t get results until a Friday.
Maybe ask when MDT is and when you’re hopefully going to be discussed?
Also, I always had an appointment face to face to discuss the outcome. Generally the day after I’d been discussed at the MDT.
I hope this helps as much as it can and your biopsies are clear
Good luck xx
Thank you,
I suppose I'm just clutching at straws about what I think would indicate positive news.
I only had my biopsy on Tuesday and told myself I'd just stay focused and positive but that's easier said than done as the more I learn the more I realise there is no "one size fits all" and what seems ok on the face of it could provide a negative result and vice versa.
Appreciate you taking the time to reply
Hi Nicola
The time frame for receiving the results is not normally an indication of whether they are good or bad- it just depends on how busy the pathology lab is at your hospital. It can even vary at the same hospital.
My biopsy results took around a week and my post op pathology took around 3 1/2 weeks.
The hospital may be able to give you an indication as to when you can expect them as they will know how busy the labs are.
You should be able to chose how you receive the results. I opted to have mine via phone by one of the nurses. I preferred to be told at home. Afterwards I had a face to face appointment to discuss treatment. I could have had an appointment to go in for the results if I had wanted to.
I asked questions during my biopsy so although they can not tell you there and then- only the biopsy can confirm or rule out cancer- from talking to the nurse I was aware that it did not look good. She also had already requested a CT scan for me to be done urgently- so we were both expecting it to show cancer.
The only thing that can sometimes affect results is the multi disciplinary team meeting. So for my hospital it is done on a Thursday am and results tended to come back after the MDT. So my post op results did not come back in time for the weekly MDT and were delayed.
Fingers crossed you will hear quickly.
Jane
Oh no problem.
I completely understand your anxiety. I was the same. It’s hard but remember you’re not alone.
Like Jane, when I was having my biopsy they had an idea it didn’t look good and told me kinda to expect it was going to be cancer.
Lo and behold, it was.
Everyone is different like you say and not one size fits all.
Try and stay off google. Use well known websites like Macmillan etc.
I have/had breast cancer so I was looking at breast cancer now. See if there is one for your bits and pieces for information?
When you know the outcome, things will change again for you. Emotionally.
You will manage whatever the outcome.
