Hi everyone,
I am just wondering if anyone knows of any other reasons why the uterine lining would be thicker if it isn’t cancer? I saw someone say ‘anything over 20mm signifies malignancy’ - which honestly, has scared me. Tomorrow I see the gynaecologist so I can ask them; but I feel up to now the people I have spoken to haven’t been of much help and I’m more confused!! 3 months ago my transvaginal scan showed fibroids and a simple cyst. Now it’s saying no fibroids and a complex cyst and thick womb lining. (21mm) 3 months ago it was 4mm.
Hi Marina
There are possible reasons for a thickened lining and cysts that are not cancer. It is however always important to rule out cancer and any possible more serious causes first.
Hyperplasia simply means a thickened lining. There can be different reasons for this to happen.
Hyperplasia can happen when there is an imbalance in hormones. It can sometimes be due to inflammation. Sometimes it can be caused by medication given eg; hormonal treatments after breast cancer.
There are different types. Some need treatment. Some just need monitoring. Some can clear up on their own. Some could potentially lead to a cancer developing in the future in some women. This link should help explain.
Endometrial Hyperplasia: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment
Perhaps write a list of questions that you want to ask at your appointment tomorrow. I found it helpful.
Good Luck for tomorrow and I hope you get some clarification/answers.
