Vaginal issues 2 years post surgery

Hi

I am 55 years old and are now 2 years post surgery after a diagnosis of stage 1 endometrial cancer.  Prior to my diagnosis I did experience vaginal dryness  irritation which my GP put down to the menopause and I was prescribed HRT pessaries to use daily - I stopped using these after my diagnosis and haven't used them since.

More recently I've been experiencing the dryness etc again and so I have got myself some Dr Wolf vaginal cream, however I am really struggling to get the applicator in my vagina...I can get it in about an inch and then it becomes too painful to go any further, although it actually feels as if there is no where else left to go and even though I was being gentle I did notice a very small amount of blood on the applicator.

So I'm just wondering whether anyone else had experienced anything similar to this - is is possible for the vagina to just close up (I'm not sexually active).  I know my cervix had closed up when I was having initial investigations so I am wondering whether something similar has happened. I do have a CNS however I don't really feel very supported by my consultant who makes me feel like I am wasting his time when I have reported spotting problems previously ( I am on a patient led follow up regime).

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

  • Hello Ejax

I am sorry to hear that you are having some vaginal issues.

I had a look at your bio and see that you didn't have radiotherapy which I know can cause some vaginal problems.

I do think it would be worth getting checked- You could contact your CNS or I wonder if in the first instance it would be worth seeing your practice nurse. They would be able to take a quick look and see if the issue is due to the dryness or something else. It may be that they could offer a non hormonal cream or sort some dilators that may help. If they were concerned they would then be able to get you seen at the hospital.

I am sorry that you have not felt supported by your consultant previously but I would advise getting this checked, particularly with the spotting.

If you want to talk things through first you could always give the Support Line a call and speak with one of the nurses. The details are below.

  • Thank you for your reply Jane - I was wondering whether it was more of a GP Issue than the hospital so will see if I can get an appointment with them.

  • I think that I would personally see my practice nurse in the first instance and they could take a quick look and advise what to do.

  • Hello

I agree 100% with Jane. It is worth getting any spotting/discomfort checked. It's disappointing and sad that you don't feel supported by your Consultant - especially as you are "patient led follow up". You should not be made to feel this way, it's not fair on you.

I hope you get some answers and treatment soon via your GP. If you need some more support just ask, and let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Ejax, I’ve just got some vaginal moisturiser to try after my recent hysterectomy and am already finding it definitely helps. Mine is in a tube so I’m just using my finger to apply it. Not sure if you’ve tried dispensing the applicator contents onto your finger to see if that helps with getting it in the right place - a finger (whilst bigger) is much softer than plastic and easier to avoid poking into sensitive areas?
