Hi
I had a robotic radical hysterectomy 3 days ago. I came home the day after the procedure and everything is going ok , but I have not been able to pass a bowel motion.
I been taking lactulose as prescribed by the hospital, drinking lots of water etc but still nothing (i am eating ok). I am having some discomfort and my husband is very keen for me to contact the dr about the issue but I want to wait.
Has anyone had a similar experience or any words of advice?
Hi Doodle74
This seems to be normal for a lot of people.
i would still recommend contacting Dr as there may be something else that can be tried if the lactulose is not having effect. I was recommended to take dulco ease- which is a different type of laxative. On doctors advice I took these for around a week and they did work. I found it was the first time where there was the issue and after that, particularly as I started moving more- things soon got back to normal. I also drank lots of apple juice as that is something that I previously used to help.

Hi Doodle74
It was was 7 days before I managed to”go”. I was prescribed Laxido, but I found it helpful to put my feet on a small stool in front of the loo. This puts your body in a more natural position to poo without straining while you’re seated.

I personally wouldn’t worry - I went naturally after 4 days and without taking anything. I kept my diet light, ate lots of fruit and veg and very little bread (as wheat can constipate), and let my body get its act together in its own time. Walking should help your breathing, circulation and digestion get back to normal - I did 5-10 mins twice a day for the first 2-3 days then gradually increased.
Hi, I had a similar experience after my recent hysterectomy. I took 2 senna tablets every night as prescribed (I think these are stronger than lactulose), drank loads of water, walked a lot, but after 5 days I was bunged up - wanted to go but it just wouldn’t come out (sorry if that’s too much info!). It was on a Sunday and I was too uncomfortable to wait until the Monday to call anyone so after some reading I got some glycerol suppositories from the supermarket and within an hour I was able to successfully go. These will only work if you’re ready to go but bunged up, but they really do work (and are gentle on the body with no after effects). I’ve never used them before but they really helped me! Good luck - it does get better!
I had the same problem after my recent hysterectomy. I was also on Lactulose. My friend is a nurse and advised me to take 4 of them in one day then 2 the next day. It worked. It is only fibre so should not do you any harm. I then just took the one a day for a few days. Obviously check with your medical team if you are OK to do this but it worked for me and I've had no side effects x
