Bowel/bladder urgency

Evening folks. Post radiotherapy I have had to visit the loo with an increased urgency. As a result I have  become a bit of a hermit for months . Now I would like to get out a bit more.

Someone mentioned that we can apply for a card to show to folk in shops explaining that we need access to a loo wherever possible.

Does anyone know who to apply to?

Thank you

  • Hi I have a MacMillan one in my radiotherapy pack

  • Hi Princess Xena

Am sorry to hear that you have some lingering effects from the radiotherapy. You are not alone and it can limit what you feel you can do.

If you click this link it will take you to a page to get a toilet card- if you click download- you can print one yourself or alternatively you can order one.

It may also be an idea to get a RADAR key as these give you access to disabled toilets. They tend to be better if you do have an accident or need a freshen up while out.

Are you having appointments still for check ups? You could ask to be referred to a Late effects clinic and they will help you with the bowel effects. It is good to get a referral because they will be able to confirm that the symptoms are due to the radiotherapy and that nothing else is causing them. It may also help to look into what you are eating and keep a food and a toilet chart. I found that dairy foods in particular would bring on symptoms. I did this under the guidance of my team but it has helped me manage the Late effects.

The following link has some information that I found helpful.

Also being prepared in advance can help. This link is to search for the closest toilets when you do go out.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi

I feel for you as I am having similar problems but I only finished radiotherapy two weeks ago so it is very early days for me and this is to some extent expected. It's quite unnerving stepping out of the front door isn't it when you feel you might need the loo at any minute?

I have the same Macmillan card as Travelling girl. The bit at the end of the card snaps off and can be attached to your keyring. The main card part I keep in my phone case. I used the card once last week and the staff in the shop were very nice about it.

When planning going out, I take a rucksack with me with extra undies and leggings and wipes - just in case. I also work out where all the loos will be. At the moment I have to use medication to help with my symptoms but I hope that settles in time. I also wear a large sanitary pad for extra protection - more for my reassurance to be honest as well.

I echo Jane's advice about getting referred for a review as you say it has been months now. A check up/referral to see where you are experiencing difficulties would be a good way to move forward and maybe some support with practical ways to get your confidence back.

I wish you all the best.
