Failed biopsy

I had my appointment yesterday as planned with gynae/oncology. She tried to do a pipelle biopsy but failed due to the neck of my womb being totally closed.  It was too painful,  I wanted to continue but she wouldn't. I now have to have a biopsy/hysteroscopy under GA . This waiting is absolutely devastating me. What if it fails under anaesthetic also? I feel like I'm going to die before I even get a diagnosis.  I'm sorry if that sounds trivial compared to what most of you are going through...so please accept my apologies, I just don't know how much more I can take

  • Hi Maz25, bless you - mine failed too as the consultant was worried about me potentially fainting from the pain, or me being damaged inside by the pushing. I was concerned too about the wait as I just wanted it done. I had my pre-op assessment done two weeks later, and my hysteroscopy under GA two weeks after that. I had similar fears to you about whether it could fail under GA too, but it was a breeze. Arrived at Southampton hospital for 7.30am, walked to theatre about 10am and was back in the recovery room awake by 11am. The consultant came to see me, told me he’d call me in a couple of weeks with the result. Went home just after midday, after a drink and a bit of toast.

  • Good morning

I am sorry that this happened to you and it is not trivial to be so worried - it is very understandable. We all completely understand about the overwhelming feelings and fear and anxiety that arise when things don't go to plan.

Mine went ok but I have heard this can happen and the option next of a GA will hopefully be fine. We are all different and it sounds like the doctor had your best interests at heart by stopping the procedure. They will book you in as soon as they can.

Try as much as you can to focus on one day at a time. This is easy to say but not always easy to do. The Macmillan nurses are there to help too. Do you know who your Macmillan nurse is? Do you have one?

I'm glad you reached out to this support group. I have been inspired and reassured by the ladies on here. We all "get it".

Let us know how you get on and wishing you all the best.

  • Thanks for your reply. I'm just feeling like this is taking forever, it's been tests and scans since October. Had enough....I feel like if it is cancer it is spreading with every day wasted. I don't have a Macmillan nurse as I've not actually been diagnosed yet.

    • Thanks for your reply. It's the waiting all the time I'm emotionally drained now. I didn't realise there would be pre ops etc. Now that means added time, I wish I'd just said I'd do it  without GA
  • Maz25, bless you - but it would have not been safe to continue, same as for me. I really would not have wanted to end unconscious through the pain, or haemorrhaging and needing emergency help, and I can’t imagine you’d have wanted to either! Our doctors stopped for our own well-being. Just keep gently nudging for a date and it will happen.

  • Hi Maz25

I am sorry that the biopsy couldn't happen. It is not uncommon and the usual route is to have it done under GA.

I can understand you wanting to continue but if your cervix was closed and the pain was extreme the doctor is right to stop in case of causing any damage, heavy bleeding etc. I know that you just want to know but in the grand scheme of things, waiting a couple of weeks hopefully, to have it done safely under GA is not going to make a major difference to the outcome. It is better it is done safely the biopsy is done fully rather than causing the trauma.

Perhaps speak to your CNS/hospital or even GP to keep pushing for it to be done asap. Perhaps also enquire if you could go on a last minute cancellation list.

I understand how frustrating this is.

  • Bless you. I don't think they will hang about, but as   said, keep "gently nudging" for an appt.

Let us know how you get on.

    Take good care of yourself.

  • How would i keep nudging, don't have any contact number for the hospital or anything?

  • Speak to your GP- I did an online consultation when I was waiting and the GP was able to contact the hospital directly on an internal NHS line and I was given an appointment the following day. Worth a try.

The GP may also have letters etc with contact details for your consultant. Mine knew who my consultant was before I did as it was the consultant who had ordered the biopsy and scans. I was then able to email the consultants secretary directly.

  • Contact your GP and ask who you were referred to. The GP should have details of the outcome of your appt by now hopefully. The Consultant you were referred to will have a secretary attached to them.

Your GP can assist with expediting this for you hopefully.
