So I had my radical hysterectomy 6 weeks ago Monday. I start chemo on the 12th. I have high grade stage 3C serous .

Just today started feeling weird "down there ". I wouldn't say pain...just a little bit of discomfort. I'm thinking it's likely my imagination since I have nothing down there anymore to hurt ?

  • Hi Nit.Thu 57

Sorry to hear you are experiencing this discomfort but I feel your real worry is not the pain/discomfort itself, but why you have it and what could it be.

I had a radical hysterectomy back in April 2021 and thinking about it, I remember having something similar and thinking the same. To me it was almost like a 'phantom pain'. Obviously, I would advise you check it out with your CNS or oncologist just so they can check you over. Also, 6 weeks is a relatively short period of time. You are still healing, and everything else that is left, is still settling to find a place and maybe fill the space that is left behind.

I hope this goes some way to reassuring you, but please let me know how you get on and what the experts say.

    Best wishes

  • Hi, I too have high grade serous and had my hysterectomy back in May.   Although the pain was not as bad as I was expecting I did find that it took a lot longer to recover than the approx 6 weeks I was told.   I was having pains for quite a while and then read somewhere that it can take about 12 weeks to really feel well (I still get the odd twinge!).   It does take a while for everything to settle into its new position and I found that a pain could be there one day and gone the next!

Having said that, everyone is different so I would suggest that it would be a good idea to get it checked out if you are concerned.

I started chemo in July and have had 3 cycles.  For me the anticipation was worse than the actual day.  The staff are lovely, its painless and an opportunity to catch up with a good book, listen to a podcast, watch a film etc.

    Wishing you well.

  • Hi wgn I was reassured reading your post to Nit.Thu57 as I have the past few days been wondering about the dull period type pain I have low down near my vagina. I am 7 weeks post total hysterectomy and suddenly over the weekend this ache started. I have had slight bleeds but have spoke to the cancer nurse and she assured me it can last up to 12 weeks and everyone heals at a different rate. Then this started. I realise a lot is still healing internally but your mind starts thinking about other things . I have been great and possibly because of that maybe I have over did things at times. Just knowing others have found things still needing longer than say 6 to 8 weeks to recover

  • Hello Nit.Thu57

I am sorry to hear that you have a bit of discomfort and can understand why you are concerned. However it is just 6 weeks from surgery and I can remember being told it does take some time for everything to settle down from the surgery and for everything inside to move/settle into the new positions. She explained that ligaments etc are cut during the operation, and the bowel tends to move into the space where the uterus was. She also said there is likely to be bruising inside that takes a few weeks to heal. I also found just doing less than normal while recovering meant I sort of stiffened up. I think also as any internal stitches inside dissolve it can feel a bit like it is pulling. That's what I found. I found also I had pain from the bruising caused by the anti coagulant injections and still had this as I went into the first cycle of chemo. Best bet I think is to mention it to your CNS for a bit of reassurance.

I wish you well with your chemo and please do let us know if there is anything you need.
