Hello everyone,
my 78 year old mum had laporoscopic robotic keyhole surgery last week (Thursday) for a total hysterectomy (diagnosed with endometrial endmetrioid adenocarcinoma in November), and was given injections to self inject each night for 28 days (Inhixa - Enoxaparin sodium - a 'low molecular weight heparin'). She weighs 57kg and is on a 40mg dose. (No stockings - removed after operation.)
There is nothing in the leaflet, and she was given no advice on discharge (only in hospital overnight) re any food or drink she shouldn't take - eg high in Vitamin K, high in potassium, high in salicylates. Obviously she doesn't want to exlude foods with these entirely(?), but is she ok to eat things which are eg medium in potassium? Should she avoid berries? Does she only need to avoid foods high in Vitamin K, but those which are medium are ok? (Before the op she was drinking green smoothies, almonds, berries, etc) Or should the focus be on consuming the RDA of Vit K and potassium in a day but not much more than that?
She has had no blood test to check the level of potassium or platelets, and none are scheduled.
Hoping for advice from a Macmillan nurse(?) or anyone else who knows a bit about this. I can see that there are a few ladies on here who mention these injections, so perhaps you received advice on this(?)
Many thanks in advance
Feel free to check with her CNS if you’re unsure, as we’re not medical here, but I’ve never heard of any dietary restrictions with the heparin injections - it’s merely a preventative not a treatment.
I wasn't given any advice to avoid any foods while on the injections but I would check with her cancer nurse specialist. Or perhaps go on the Ask a Nurse section on MacMillan for more advice. They are really helpful and can point you in the right direction
Hi I too had these injections but there was no mention of avoiding any foods and so I ate my usual diet and was fine, but please do follow the other members advice and call up your mums CNS or tell macmillan helpline by scrolling to the very bottom of this page. X
Many thanks for all the responses , and to the Macmillan Nurse who also responded in the 'Ask a nurse' section.
Mum did eventually manage to get hold of her CNS who advised she was ok to eat what she wanted (all things in moderation of course).
I have 11 more injections to give myself , the dose is a prophylactic dose that everyone is given post surgery . As far as I’m aware it would only be warfarin medication that certain foods should be avoided or consumed less
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
