What post-treatment follow up did you have/are you having/will you have?
My cancer at post-op histology (Feb 22) was grade 1, stage 2, and I had 25 x radio and 2 x brachy, finished mid-May 22. I was originally told one check up with the oncologist post treatment and that I’d then be referred to patient-led follow up (with nurse support). But when I had that appointment (with internal), I was told I would have one more in three months’ time (which happened today, with internal). Today I was told I’d have one more - a final one (with internal) - in a further three months’ time. And then be put on patient-led with nurse support. I don’t mind at all as it’s good to have some monitoring - I’m just aware that it’s changed since the summer so I imagine there’s been some kind of care review, either just by my hospital or perhaps nationally? I thought it might be interesting to compare. Obviously there will likely be some variation depending on grade/stage and treatment, and may also be some regional policy differences.
I had my hysterectomy in December 2020 and for the first year following that I had 3-monthly check-ups and internal examinations. I now have 6-monthly checks and an annual CT scan. I am told this will continue for 5 years.
Hi Marmitefan
I'm Grade 3 Stage 1a but even so I think my consultant is a fan of CT scans.
I had both CT and MRI pre op.
After hysterectomy and before chemo I had to have another CT scan and another after chemo finished. I'm now going to have one mid October as it'll be 3 months since end of chemo but I'm unsure if I have another scan in January which will be one year since hysterectomy.
From memory I was advised and am to have 3-monthly checks first year, then 6 monthly for the second year then annually until 5 Years post op.
The only internal I had was for my first brachytherapy. Hope this helps xx
My cancer was serous Grade 3, Stage 1A/B. Hysterectomy 27/1/22, 4 carboplatin, 4 brachytherapy - last one 30/8/22. I was informed there would be no further internal examinations or CTs or MRIs unless necessary. Recent telephone follow up on 26/9 with consultant lasting 1.45mins during which I was asked set questions regarding any side effects and did I know who to contact if I got symptoms of recurrence. I was very happy with this. I do not want to visit cancer centre unless I have to. I was asked how I would like the next appointment phone or face to face and again I opted for telephone appointment. I think they are great. Far less stressful all round. I had breast cancer in 2008 and after treatment there were mammograms and appointments for physical external examinations which I felt at the time to be a complete waste of NHS resources. I did also have a telephone follow up with lovely radiotherapy lady to check if I had any side effects from brachytherapy which I didnt and that I am using the dreaded the dilators which I am. I have been very fortunate to have no side effects from chemo or radiotherapy perhaps a little extra tiredness.
