Has anyone had to have a blood transfusion during a hysterectomy?

This is something I am really worried about.

  • Hi Missy,

I have been on this forum for 5 years and don't think I've heard of anyone having a blood transfusion. Why are you worried about it? I personally had little blood loss during and after the operation. They won't give you one unless you need it and it could be a life saver. My husband recently had one after an operation, and I was very grateful that he did. It helped him to recover.

  • When I came round from my hysterectomy there was a sanitary pad underneath me, and it had a tiny spot of blood on it no bigger than my little fingernail. That was the only blood loss I had post op and didn’t use any pads after that one. I gave away all the packs of pads I’d bought as I didn’t need them.

Hi NannyAnny...I just don't want anyone's blood.  My son had open heart when he was younger and we made sure the family that was eligible donated prior to the surgery.

I've already asked a couple family members if they would donate (if I even need a hysterectomy, which I really think I will from my history and symptoms).

When you say you "came around" ? They knocked you out?

I'm going to have to ask if I can have profananol vs. anethesia (my Gastro Dr. gave me the profananol for a colonoscopy) because I have dementia and anytime someone with dementia is given anethesia there is a danger of them slipping further into their disease.

I liked the profananol (sp?) also...I was awake after, not groggy, not nauseaus...I was happy and felt like I was on cloud nine....It is the drug Michael Jackson overdosed on.

Good to know from you and Nanny that there is not much blood.......Thank you.

Read your profile again...you had the hysterscopy but they did an ultrasound first.

So now I'm thinking my Dr....just KNOWS and went right to the hysterscopy and apparently I should take some pain reliever prior to the procedure...Its Wed.

I'm glad I read your profile because I have to try and endure the pain because the less anethesia for me the better because I have dementia. Disappointed

  • Yes I “came around” as I had a general anaesthetic for my hysterectomy. I’m pretty sure we all do. Try and trust your consultant and medical team, they’re highly trained and will do a good job.

I read that they can also just do local anethesia...Yes, I will ask them..I'm getting ahead of myself but I really know things aren't normal and they have never been with my GYN appointments.

Well from 1990 to now I was clear...but in 1990 I had HPV....It came back in 2018 or 2019.....and I haven't had sex with anyone in 5 years....so I am proof (I feel) that HPV can stay dormant and then return.

  • I . I think you're getting  a little confused. Local anaesthesia is sometimes offered for a hysteroscopy. Some ladies just take a couple of paracetamol beforehand. I myself had it done under GA, epidural actually as they couldn't insert the "Wand" due to my stenosed cervix - it was just too painful.

A hysterectomy will be done under GA - General Anaesthetic as it is major surgery.

Just trust in your team, they're the professionals and know what they're doing.

    Hugs, Barb xx

    Yes..LOL...I am VERY CONFUSED.

I can't have GA....I won't...so hopefully they agree to the other drug my Colonoscopy Dr used IF I have to have one....

Yes, of course I trust them...We have really good Drs in this area....

But, by all means I am to avoid GA....My Gastro understood that and told me he would try that other drug and if I woke up there would have to be an anethesiologist standing by.....

I'm hoping if I have to go thru this...this team will agree as well and I will have them also talk to my Neurologist.
