Neck of womb cancer?

My friend has just had a biopsy today and her doctor said she thought it might be cancer at the neck of her womb. Has had bleeding and a mucus discharge for a while and doc saying she ‘had some bad news’ has upset her. Pathology result might take two weeks to confirm either way and she has to get an MRI scan too. Has anyone had similar?
I finished my breast cancer treatment last June so am well prepared to support her as treatment would be chemo and radiotherapy, not surgery? Any info advice would be great.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to you and your friend to the Online Community.

Reading your post I would think your friend will have a full hysterectomy after her pathology results are in and the MRI scan has been done and results in. My treatment started in the same way, a slight mucous discharge, hysteroscopy followed by CT and MRI scans revealed a 4cm tumour in my womb.

I did get confused when I read your bio about breast cancer, I hope you're doing well. It might be helpful to add a bit at the bottom about your friend.

It might also be a good idea to download this booklet Understanding Womb (Endometrial) Cancer. I found it invaluable on my journey.

  • Hello Dclem4 and welcome to the group.

I think it would be good for your friend to be able to confirm for you after her tests exactly which type of cancer she has, if she does have a cancer diagnosis.

The reason I say this is that the neck of the womb is the cervix, and the treatments for womb and cervical cancer are different. You mentioned that the treatment would be chemo and radiotherapy, rather than surgery, which would be typical with cervical cancer where surgery is often not an option. Also, if it is cervical cancer, a hysterectomy is not performed after the radiation treatment due to the difficulties with radiation affecting the organs in the pelvis.

If it transpires that your friend has cervical cancer, we have another group which deals specifically with that which you would be very welcome to join. Your friend is lucky to having you support her through this, and of course she would be very welcome to join the community here for advice and support.

    Sarah xx
