My surgery is scheduled for Tuesday , we had a plan as I need my scooter to get from the car park to the admissions ward and now that plan has fallen at the first hurdle !!

My husband has been admitted to the same hospital I will be at having had an unexpected cardiac event on Saturday !! He needs an angiogram and possibly a stent and there is a wait . It could be 5 days. So now, I have to drive myself - and either leave my scooter in the ward or try and walk to the ward. My husband cant drive the car home after his procedure and the dog will now be in charge of the household !!

One of our daughters is going to make the 200 mile drive tomorrow to take me in , bring the scooter and car home and take the dog back with her. So all we have to deal with is who gets out first , how they get home ( we live rurally - no obvious taxi service but there is a bus lol ) and who is taking care of who.

Getting old is damn hard work !!

  • FunkyNana - sorry to read of your troubles. It is good that your daughter can help with the car, scooter and dog.  Are there any charities or support groups local to you which could help you and/or husband longer term e.g. Macmillan volunteers?  You could start by looking (down the bottom of these pages) at "In your area" to try and contact local help. Try phoning Macmillan for advice. Maybe another charity can help - would Age UK be appropriate? (I don't know how old you are). Is there any organisation that your husband can call on for help due to his cardiac problem? For your dog - there is a charity called The Cinnamon Trust which might be able to help with dog-walks.  Good luck with it all. LR.

  • I suggest you talk to your GP surgery - there’s very likely hospital transport that could be arranged for you, I’m an hour away from my hospital and I know there is hospital transport available (provided by the hospital but arranged by the GP). I imagine there would also be taxis that cone out your way, even being rural. I got a taxi to hospital for both my hysteroscopy and my hysterectomy. Re your getting to the ward, I’m sure that a nurse or healthcare assistant would come down for you with a wheelchair if you let them know in advance.

  • Hi Oh it's all going wrong for you. Sorry to hear about hubby, obviously the stress has got to him too, I hope he makes a swift recovery. Good to hear one of your daughter's has come through to arrange to take you in and collect the scooter and look after your dog. My family are also over 200 miles away and we live rurally so I know the problems that arise.

As the other ladies have said give your GP a call to see about arranging transport. You could also give the Macmillan Support Helpline a ring on freephone 0808 808 00 00 they should be able to offer some advice and assistance.

    Sending big hugs, Barb xx
