Hello, I am looking for some advice please.
I am currently undergoing chemotherapy for stage 1c2 ovarian cancer but this is expected to finish (fingers crossed) in early April. I would like to have a holiday to look forward to but won't book anything until my chemo has finished and my consultant is happy with the treatment.
I know travel insurance can be tricky and I will look on the dedicated Macmillan forum for advice regarding travel insurance but I would like to have a holiday with some sunshine to look forward to. I'm thinking somewhere relaxing in Europe.
I was wondering how soon after my chemo has finished that I would be able to go on holiday. I had hoped to go away approximately two and a half months after my chemo had finished. Does this seem like a realistic possibility? I know we have the additional risk of Covid but I am triple jabbed and would get an additional booster when I can.
I definitely would not book anything or not anything which does not have free cancellation before my consultant is happy with my treatment but I would just like to understand if a holiday in Europe in late June is something I might be able to do?
Thank you for any help and advice.
Hi Sarah16. Oh the idea of a holiday is lovely! I do know the travel forum here at Macmillan is very recommended - I've referred several members in the past and they have been delighted with the results.
I'd call the Macmillan Support line (number shown below) they'd be able to advise how soon after chemo has finished it's be realistic to plan a holiday.
Have a lovely time, hugs, Barb xx

Hi Sarah16 I am in a similar situation - but I booked our holiday for this summer last September, just before I had my diagnosis. I am starting chemo tomorrow morning, 4 cycles followed by brachytherapy, which will hopefully be finished by April and we are going in late June. I am thinking positively! We have paid a deposit, but the balance is not due until May, so if I wasn’t able to go, we should know by then.
I feel that we need something to look forward to - and this is also true for my hubby, who is going through this with me. We are going to southern France and drive, so we reckon that if I became ill, we could get home in about 10 hours. We are renting a gite, so quite easy to keep away from crowds and we can do as much, or little as I feel up to - I intend a restful holiday in the sun, with good food and wine and good books!
We have an annual travel insurance policy, which we have just renewed. I phoned and told them about my treatment and they have just excluded anything linked to my cancer diagnosis, but the premium remains the same. I am very happy with this outcome - in Europe we also have access to local healthcare with our GHIC cards.
i am really, really hoping that we are not being over optimistic - it is fun planning a trip, even if you wait to actually book it
Hi Sarah16, yes indeed the Travel insurance forum is the one, it also discusses travel in general by members but it’s often that people find it difficult to get insurance at the right cost that covers you that many people ask about. Personally a trip way sounds like a lovely idea as long as your medical team are happy because they will understand your personal situation. After going through treatment and recovery from cancer we like to be able to go and enjoy ourselves and a holiday always sounds great. I was lucky at my diagnosis as i had already got a holiday booked which i went too before my op as my consultant was happy although i was restricted to what I could do but I did enjoy it. My insurance covered it without extra charge because i had already booked it but I think if I hadn’t it may of been different but my insurance company were fantastic about it all.
