I was wondering if anybody who is having chemo could recommend a shampoo or conditioner to minimise hair loss please?
I'm only having carboplatin so a cold cap has not been recommended but I did wonder if there were shampoos and conditioners that some of you used and found it was worth buying? Or perhaps just standard shampoos and conditioners from the supermarket are fine to continue using?
Thank you
Hi Sarah. I have not started chemo yet, so I am interested in this too. However a friend recommended a website called lookgoodfeelbetter.co.uk She found it helpful when she had chemo a few years ago - it is a charity and they run workshops on hair, skin, nails etc. The workshops are all virtual at the moment, but I had a quick look this evening and thought I would sign up for one. Might be worth a look. Take care x
Hi there
My chemo nurse said you can't beat Johnson's Baby Shampoo. Supermarket shampoos and conditioners may be a bit harsh. Had my hair chopped short a couple of weeks ago, got some turbans at the ready. When it grows back it'll initially be fine then thicken up. I recall when my sister had chemo for Breast Cancer years ago after she lost her hair she was delighted with what grew back as it was thick and wavy as opposed to what it had been fine and frizzy - mind you that was before the days of frizz-ease and such products!

Hi Sarah16,
I was taking a hormone inhibitor for 2.5 yrs prior to starting chemo. One of the side effects of that treatment was hair thinning. I was lucky enough to have thick hair to start with but when I noticeably started shedding, I switched over to SLS and paraben free shampoos and conditioners. None of them prevented hair loss unfortunately but I shed the least when using the Percy and Reed ‘wonder wash’ range. It also added volume to my hair. Unfortunately the cold cap didn’t work for me (Abraxane/Carboplatin regime) so I’m now embracing the bald look and strangely enough enjoying it.
A top tip I received from one lady was to only wash my hair once a week, if possible. And remember not to rub your hair, just glide the shampoo through like you're stroking you hair. I’ve got to admit that did take a bit of getting used to! I used to wash my hair every other day and liked a good scrub of the scalp.
Fingers crossed any hair thinning is minimal for you. Good luck!

Btw it sounds like your Filgrastim injection is the same as my Pelgraz injection. Let’s hope they continue to do their job.
