I have found out that I’ve to have 6 rounds of chemo and each treatment will take approximately 5-6 hours. Do any of you lovely ladies have any advice on what to take with me other than the obvious reading material/ I pad?

Thank you

Kate xx

  • Hi . I might not be a lot of help as I didn't have chemo but I would think soduko or puzzle book - with pencil and eraser. Snacks and water. Wear loose clothing if you're going to be there for 5-6 hours. A hand fan, mints, citrus drinks. If you like crafting - needlepoint. I know a friend of mine is a big fan of those colouring in books - my sister got me one last year and I'm ashamed to say it's still in the drawer.

Hope fully the other ladies will be along to offer their ideas.

    Sending hugs, Barb xx

    • Hi Katlee, I have just finished 6 sessions of Chemotherapy. My appointments were always 5 - 6 hours the treatments were Paclitaxel and Carboplatin. I took with me  a magazine, book, lunch, snacks and drinks. I always found that I felt very sleepy after all the medication I was given before the Chemo was started. I was given Anti-histamine, Anti -sickness and Steroids so by the time the nurse started the Chemo I was ready for a sleep. My appointments were usually 9 am or 10 am. So I quite often managed to sleep till I was ready for lunch. So even though I was at the Hospital for a long time it didn't seem too bad. The best advice I was given was to keep a day to day account of how you are feeling to record side effects, as on each appointment you will be asked how you have been and it does help to have it written down. Wishing you good luck with your treatment .
  • Hi Liz62

thank you for your reply and glad to hear you’ve completed your 6 rounds, hope you're feeling ok.Those are the drugs I’ve to have too and was wondering if any of it would make me sleepy.

A written record seems like a good idea and I will do that too. Thanks for ideas of things to take in my bag as well.

  • Hi Katlee, a friend of my sister in law who had Chemo about 8 years ago advised me to take the Anti- sickness they give you to take home and use the Helpline for any questions you have. If in doubt ask someone, as it's better to get advice on what to do than leave things to get worse. Hope this helps
