Hi everyone,

I'm six months post Brachy and experiencing some very, very slight spotting and the occasional sharp stabbing pain in the vaginal area.  I have a hospital appt for a flexi sigmoidoscopy next Monday as I also have a bleeding bottom occasionally.  Of course the two may be connected because of the Brachy, but I just wondered if anyone else has gone through the same?

  • Hi Zigoin123 I am 1 year post Brachy and I sometimes have spotting and when I dilate I have a stinging pain at the top of the vagina. In March I had a coloscopy because I had bleeding and mucas discharge from my rectum. I have been diagnosed with radiation proctitis.  Hope things go well for you Dawn x

Thanks Chicplc, sounds like on the same journey as you.  What is the prognosis?

  • Hi Re spotting, unless you have a heavy bleed or discharge it is normal when dilating. Re radiation proctitis, I have had persodone enemas and they have made a difference, no bleeding from back passage, some mucas but very little. Bowel still not right and I have urgency but this is improving. Dawn x

  • Hi Chicpic and Zigoin,

I have first hand experience of healing after radiotherapy. My husband had 7 weeks of radiotherapy on his neck 13 years ago, after throat cancer. A year later he still could not eat and permanently coughed. The radiotherapy had damaged the larynx. That was removed, a speech valve put in (which is how he speaks now), and it took another one and half years for the neck to heal up fully. They said it was due to the radiation making the flesh poor to heal. I would say it took him 3 years to get over the radiotherapy.

So, do not give up. Time could be the healer!!   xxxxxx
