Hi, i am nearly 57 years old and have been taking HRT for the last 10 years or so. I have been having what i thought were occasional periods every year but only one or two each year. As i have continued with HRT i am not sure if i have actually gone through the menopause. Last October whilst on holiday i had a heavy period\bleed which lasted about 10 days in total with some period type cramping pain and since then no blood loss as such but i have for about 10 days this month had period type cramping discomfort and a extremely small amount of blood type mucous. I saw my G/p last week and yesterday i had the usual ultrasound scans which seemed ok, lining normal thickness and then i had a hysteroscopy where they saw a fairly large polyp, which was removed and a biopsy also taken. The consultant was a bit alarmed that i had been on HRT for so long without a break. I am now in limbo waiting for the results, has anybody had a similar experience at this age as i wonder whether i have been in denial about the yearly bleeds that i have been having, thinking that they were somehow normal as i was coming through the latter part of menopause. i am feeling what will be will be but would like other people with perhaps similar symptoms to tell me of their experience. Sarah.

  • Hi jubilee63

my experience is similar to yours as I was on HRT for about 10 years and had the odd spotting which I ignored as they were always around the time I would have had a period.

A bigger bleed led me to my gp and a two week referral and a scan revealed a large polyp. That was removed during the hysteroscopy.

I hope that’s where our similarities end because most polyps are benign and the only treatment necessary is removal. I won’t lie, the exam and removal was unpleasant and stressful. Also the waiting for results is  hard.

However it’s a necessary evil to make sure you’re ok and you’ll be in good hands with expert medical staff.

I was treated on a small day ward along with several other ladies who jollied each other along so didn’t feel alone.

I’m crossing my fingers for you and hope the polyp turns out to be nothing to worry about . If not I feel sure you will receive the best care and one way or another it will get sorted.

i won’t tell you not to worry because you will but the ladies on this forum are generous with their experience and support.

Try not to second guess things in the meantime or you’ll drive yourself mad!

    good luck xx

  • Hello there, I can't  really  comment on the HRT as I  have never taken it, but my periods didn't stop until I  was 56, then in April last year on my 58th birthday to be exact I  had a small light bleed which lasted a few days  I  had a a routine smear test in March  which had caused me to have some odd symptoms as if I  was going to have  a period again! I went to see my GP straight away and was sent for a hysteroscopy within two weeks, this showed a small polyp, I  was booked to have it removed a few weeks later in June, I  also had a tv ultrasound which was ok. Following the removal of the polyp I was told I would get the results in the post in around 6 weeks, however I  had a letter with an appointment within 10 days, grade 1 cancer cells had been found on the polyp. I was so shocked about this, luckily my husband was with me when I found out, an MRI  followed which seemed to suggest that I was stage 1a. At the beginning of  August  I  had a hysterectomy, ovaries, tubes etc by keyhole, I  was home the next day. Histology confirmed stage 1a  grade 1 and I  needed no further treatment.

I hope you get your results soon, the waiting is awful I know, also most polyps are not cancerous. I think I was unlucky that mine was but lucky that it was such an early stage. My fingers are crossed for you.

  • Thank you for your kind words.

  • I had a large polyp removed. Because it was high up in the womb they did it in day surgery under a GA and took a biopsy at the same time. Procedure only takes around 15 mins.  I.was in and out in an afternoon.
