Please can anyone help me with any information on a total pelvic exenteration. I have my first appointment tomorrow and I am really nervous at the thought of this big operation. I know The Royal Marsden in London is a good hospital so I’ll be in good hands, but will I have any quality of life after.?

  • HI ,

I'm sorry to hear you are facing such a big operation.  I haven't seen many posts from people on this forum about their experiences of it. It might be worth also  posting on the other Gynae forums - Cervical or Ovarian and also on  the Jo's Trust site for more information. You could also use the "Ask a Nurse" option below the Online Community Heading at the top of this page to point you in the direction for help.

I am sending you my very best wishes and hope you get some re-assurance.

Thank you Anne, it did start as service cancer in 2012; this is secondary cancer. I will take a look at cervical cancer. I’m at The Royal Marsden tomorrow armed with 2 page’s of questions for them, just getting anxious.

  • Hi

Gosh,  that's tough after this time.  I'm sure The Royal Marsden will have people who can give you lots of support and advice.

I believe you are likely to have a stoma afterwards, if so,  there is a forum on this site devoted to life with a stoma and this may be a source of helpful  information from those with personal experience.

Hi dottie. Just sending you my love and prayers for today and I hope you get the answers you are looking for. It is a very big operation but you are in one of the best hospitals and you will get expert care there. Keep us posted if you feel able to as there isn't much about this type of operation on here and it would be helpful to everyone if you were able to log the experience for future references. I know that's a big ask in spite of all you face but we are all right behind you rooting for you to get over this hurdle that has been placed in the way. You are in my thoughts today. Stay strong as you can do this. Love lamb.xx

    Hi little lamb,

Well yesterday was a long day, 8 hours travel there and back. The surgeon was running 2 hours behind so I only answered health questions. An MRI scan has been requested and another appointment for next Thursday has been made to discuss the results of this. He said it will be a few weeks before the operation would be done as they have to make sure that I am healthy enough to have it. I will be having keyhole surgery first to see if everything is as it should be inside. If I am able to have to go ahead with it, decide that I want to I will keep posting as I have found that there isn’t a lot of information to be had. If I don’t go through with it I will still post anything that I have learned along the way. Thank you so much for your kind words.

    Dear Anne,

Thank you for your advice I will take a look at the stoma group. Didn’t get a chance yesterday, hoping I might get a chance next week. Need as much information as possible in order to decide, if it is possible.
