Has anyone experienced cancer care in Anglesey?

My husband and I retired shortly before my diagnosis and we planned to move to Anglesey.

I am having second thoughts now that I’ve been diagnosed with grade 3 cancer because I don’t know what the care is like there.

Is anyone undergoing treatment there? I don’t want to give up on our retirement dream but need to be sure I’d be doing the right thing. The care I currently receive in Liverpool is excellent.

  • Hi Christmas,

Some years ago, before my husband was ill, we very nearly moved out into the countryside where there was no bus route and quite a walk for me to any shops. We decided against the idea as the house we saw needed a lot of renovation. Every time we pass that house now I am so glad we didn't move.

I am practically on a bus route where I am, and could visit husband every day. I doubt that would have been possible if we had moved. There is a lot to be said for living near amenities when you are older. I content myself with getting into the country whenever we can, but don't have the inconvenience of living in it !!

We have only visited Anglesey on holiday and enjoyed it. I live near Portsmouth, and have a couple of friends who used to live on the Isle of Wight. When he had throat cancer they had a dreadful time

getting back over to Portsmouth for check ups and treatment, and spent a fortune in fares. They have since moved back to the mainland. You could do with finding out what the system is up there.xxx

  • Hi ,

I used to live in Bangor for near 7 years with university etc and I do like it. As far as I am aware the nearest cancer care from Anglesey is Bangor Hospital. I know their renal unit is excellent passed experience there but they have a cancer treatment department  aswell. Unless anything has changed its a good hospital. Whether it compares to Liverpool women's I am unsure.

  • hi NannyAnny

Yes all the points you make are what’s going through my head. Maybe I’ll think about a holiday home there but that would also bring its own problems.

As you say we’re getting older not younger and there’s a lot of merit in being close to amenities...

    ..back to the drawing board!

  • Hi Christmas,

I think a holiday home might be the best idea! If, heaven forbid, you were taken ill there you could manage for a while, then go home!!

I had just got used to having bed and breakfast once the children had left home and thoroughly enjoyed it. When my husband retired he delightedly bought a small motorhome!! Although I suffered tents and camping when younger, because of cost, I had left all that behind, so my heart sank a little!

However, I insisted on an electric blanket, and a fixed bed!! There is nothing nicer than getting into that!! I do like roaming around and seeing different places!!! We've had a good few laughs at some of the places we've stayed at, and met some lovely people. As my husband takes forever to eat, I think this fits in better with us than if we were with a party. And at least self catering I know what he can eat (steaks are right out).

I think you are very lucky if your dreams come to fruition, but sometimes you have to  make the best of the situation!
