Morning ladies and a happy new year to everyone.  I'm a year on from my radical hysterectomy and up until a couple of weeks ago everything was fine. I had a follow up appointment with the surgeon in Dec and everything was ok then. Now my vulval region is very sore and I'm getting a bit of discharge. Also part of that area has been numb since brachytherapy but now I've got nearly full feeling. Any thoughts? Should I contact my cancer nurse or GP? I'm going on holiday next week with my husband and some friends and don't want to cancel.

  • Yes, definitely contact your cancer nurse. It's always worth getting these things checked out, if only for peace of mind. It could just be vaginitis ( mild infection, which makes you v.sore) in which case you can get some antibiotics to take with you on holiday to make you more comfortable. Xxx

Thanks for your reply. I hadn't thought of an infection as being the cause. I'll try to contact my CNS today.

I managed to speak to my CNS today and what I'm experiencing (slight discharge with blood spotting) is very common after brachytherapy but the irritation may be a mild infection that I need to check with GP if not resolved over the weekend. Thanks for advice.

  • Yes, if I were you I'd definitely get it checked by a GP. My surgeon and oncologist both said that spotting could occur up to three months after I had finished brachytherapy and you mentioned that your op/ brachytherapy was a year ago. I think it's more likely that you maybhave a mild infection that needs some antibiotics. No harm in getting it swabbed by your GP to check it out. Take care. Xxx
