Hello all, having had a total hysterectomy 6 weeks ago (stage 1 grade 1) I was referred for a colonoscopy as my mother and her brother have had colon polyps (mix of benign and cancerous), and their father passed away from bowel cancer at a relatively young age. In the back of my mind I’d been thinking for a few years I ought to be checked out, purely because of the family history - but as I had no symptoms I had not got round to it. A routine tv ultrasound found the endometrial polyp that turned out to be cancer despite the really low chance it would be. I was also referred for colonoscopy. I should have had it on Monday but having done the bowel  prep and got gowned up the decision was made that it was too soon after my hysterectomy, annoyingly.

So I had some different bowel prep and  had a ct colonography yesterday. Just had a call to say two polyps found low down on left side of colon so need flexible sigmoidoscopy to remove and test. I feel really worried- tthe fact that the endometrial polyp was cancer surprised the doctor who had said it was extremely unlikely, so I am not feeling very confident about this.. can someone help me pull myself together xx

  • Hi worried, good news that your endometrial cancer staging was low - that's the best result you can get.  And well done too for getting the bowel scan done.  Yes it is worrying that some polyps have been spotted but absolutely great that your team are now on the case.  As always the worrying is the worst part.  I don't know much about bowel cancer but I think in your shoes I would be reading up on posts in the bowel cancer group to get clued up, just in case.  It might be reassuring to do that.  I hope you get your sigmoidoscopy soon and hopefully those pesky polyps can be removed before they get chance to get up to any mischief.  Steph xxx

  • Thank you Steph xxx I’ll do some reading up as you suggest. What a palaver x

  • Hey Worried,

Sorry to hear you're back in the waiting wheel of testing and results.

As you say, polyps don't necessarily mean cancer. Someone in your family had one or more bowel polyps that were benign, so that may be the case for you too. My Grandpa had bowel polyps multiple times, and every single one they removed came back benign.

Just remember, that just because lightning struck once - it doesn't necessarily mean it will again.

Good luck with the tests, and I hope the results come back as benign!

  • Hi Lass, thank you that’s cheering xx I’m a dreadful catastrophist- It does me no good at all! I knew you lovely people would help me rationalise it. Xx

Hello again, sorry to hear you have this worry again. Best to focus on the fact most polyps are benign. I totally understand how you feel though,  just sent my national bowel screening test off on Monday, 3 months late as knew I couldn't deal with that as well as the womb business and didn't want a false positive if blood from anywhere else was detected in screening test.. Will get results in next 2 weeks but like you now a lot more anxious about  these things. The fact you have no symptoms is really positive so focus on that meantime and look after yourself.

  • Hi worried, I had a sigmoidoscopy a few months ago as I had some bleeding, it didn't find anything but i just wanted to let you know that the procedure was fine, I took sedation and watched on the screen whilst they looked through my colon. For the bowel prep the bowel group recommended that I get some wet toilet roll wipes, they were great and meant I had no discomfort from all of the bathroom trips.

The sedation was an injection, I can't remember if I had a cannula for it or not, I was wheeled through to a waiting room after the procedure and was told I'd need to wait for 30 mins, but after ten I asked if I could get dressed as I felt totally fine,

Sorry if I'm telling you what you already know, I tend to worry about procedures and like knowing what to expect.

lots of love and good luck for your appointment

  • Hi Worried,

My daughter had bleeding from the back passage and after tests they discovered a bowel polyp, which they removed. They like to remove them as they are apt to turn cancerous if left, she was told.

I think once the hospital gets hold of you, you are apt to get an MOT!! They found I had my thyroid growing down the back of my throat with one of the scans. The gynae lot were most insistent I had it checked out by the throat team, which I did. once I was over the hysterectomy. The throat team were not worried and said they have seen far worse and get a lot of referrals from other areas. He just laughed and said ' the throat is a long way from gynae bits!!' I was preparing myself for another operation, but was signed off!!!

Just try to think of it as avoiding more trouble!!! XXXXX

  • Dove thank you xxx I hope your results are clear, you’re right about worrying about dealing with more stuff, it’s exhausting. Much love xx

  • Thank you Arla that’s really helpful xx I really worry about procedures too, Im glad the  sedation was ok, I’m a bit scared  of it I hate losing control- I virtually had to be tasered into the anaesthetic room for my hysterectomy! It’s heartening yo hear it is ok. I had a ct colonography yesterday that found the polyps, that was odd the sensation of the contrast they inject. Thank you for your kindness and I’m glad your sigmoidoscopy was ok xx

  • Ahh NannyAnny that’s funny what they said about the location!! Looking at it like an MOT is a good way of approaching it xxx I’m glad your daughter was ok xx hearing the word polyps again after the cancerous one I had in uterus just panicked me xxx
