so I had all the above and awaiting biopsy results (thickening of womb lining) which is due in another 2 weeks so no real concerns at the moment except... I’m still bleeding!

I was hoping the whole procedure would stop the bleeding which I have had for months and I’m due to go on holiday in a couple of weeks.

I also have intermittent pain when passing urine, not every time just sometimes and I get a heavy pulling down feeling low down in the pelvic area.

So lovely ladies, does anyone know how long until the Mirena does its’ thing?

Thanks for your time, really appreciate the support on here.

    Hi MamaRosie

I had a Mirena a few years ago - it took a week or so before I stopped bleeding. Fingers crossed it will stop before your holiday and you and relax and enjoy.

    Hugs xx

  • Hey Rosie,

I've had what you've had a couple of times now.

For me the bleeding was constant for a week, then random spotting for the next three. While the odd feeling of the coil being there was there for a couple of months before it finds its spot and snuggles in.

If you find you're not stopping bleeding, you could always speak to your doc and see if a few days on tranexamic acid might help. It's what I take after each biopsy to help the clotting process.

    Hi Lass

Thanks for your reply that’s useful to know.

Ive got some Tranexamic acid so I will try that.

Do you mind me asking how often you had to have the same procedure again?

Can the thickening build up again with the Miren coil.

  • Heya Rosa,

I don't mind at all, ask anything you like!

So, my journey saw me having:

    • A Hysteroscopy and biopsy of the lining. This showed atypical hyperplasia and there were some polyps too.
    • I then had a myosure procedure to remove the whole lining and the polyps, and they fitted me with the coil - the polyps showed cancer.
    • The coil itself wasn't working to stop the lining from building up, and I was still bleeding. So they gave me some oral progesterone to take too.
    • 3 months later I had another Hysteroscopy with biopsy, this showed there was still atypical hyperplasia in a few places, and there were some more polyps that had grown back. They increased my oral progesterone dose.
    • They then gave me another myosure procedure which meant removing my coil, then stripping the whole lining and such. This time though, no atypical hyperplasia, no cancer, no hyperplasia. Just what they call a progesterone effect.

So in roughly August I'll need to go back for another Hysteroscopy, as they generally check every 3 months. However after a few clear tests, they extend the gap between the hysterescopies. So I'm hoping for another clear one in August again.

However, I do still get random and light bleeds that last for maybe a few hours. It's odd going to the loo to find blood in your pants, but then nothing again for days/weeks/months. Lol. I've taken to carrying a spare pair in my bag in a little sandwich bag. Just in case. I just can't get on with pads, and you're not supposed to use tampons with a coil. So I just free bleed and make regular stops to the loo after I first notice something, just in case.

    Hope that helps,

    Lass

    Hi Lass

That’s really helpful as I thought having the coil will ‘fix’ everything. That’s why I’ve been disappointed with the bleeding continuing after the hysteroscopy.

I didn’t know about not using tampons with the coil, so I’ve learnt another thing too.

I do hope your check goes ok in August, I’m on holiday when my biopsy result is due. I’m not sure if I should chase or leave it until I return especially as no news is good news!

Thank you again for sharing your experience it really does help.

    Thank you

  • Heya,

Yeh, they warned me that because of my size, how thick my lining was, and how long I'd been bleeding for - the coil may need a bit of help from an oral dose of progesterone too. So when I just kept on bleeding, with no signs of it tailing off, they started me on the tablets and it stopped within a couple of days.

I can't remember if it was in the booklet I was given after the coil was fitted, or if it was the person fitting it who told me not to use tampons. It's because there have been cases where the threads that are hanging down your vagina, have been known to get caught and tangled with the tampon. So when the tampon is pulled out.... It pulls the coil out too.

Personally, I think I'd forget about the results and just enjoy the holiday. Get them when you get back from holiday after having a wonderful, relaxing time and are ready for anything. That way, should it be news you might not like, then the holiday isn't marred. But that's just me.

Hi. Sorry to butt in but I have a connected question which I was wondering if anyone could answer. As you may know from other posts my Mum has advanced womb cancer and is only on hormonal therapy. She is on blood thinner for leg DVT. The last couple of days she has had some heavier bouts of bleeding which contain large jelly like blobs. Is that the type of bleeding anyone has experienced as she is getting quite alarmed by the look and quantity. Thanks xx

  • Hey Spu,

Sorry to hear about your Mum. I'm afraid I've not seen any other posts, so I'm not sure how advanced your Mums cancer is, or which hormones she's on.

However the jelly lumps sound like clots, which can be perfectly normal for a period bleed. However, I'd guess that she shouldn't be having any bleeds at the moment? But if you have more info it would be appreciated.

Hi Lass. Thank you. Mum has grade 1, stage 4 womb cancer. Stage 4 because it is in a groin and pan aoertic lymph nodes. No evidence anywhere else thankfully. Cannot have surgery because of DVT clot in leg and on lung (she was in hospital 11 weeks following a fall where the cancer was identified in a CT scan) but also because surgery to remove pan aoertic nodes is very long and may not remove entirely. She was on 2 x 10mg Provera hormonal therapy with radiotherapy in reserve depending upon outcome of 3 month check in October. No bleeding pre hospital just a discharge for quite a long time. She is 73. Bleeding was apparently inevitable on blood thinning injections for DVT but two nights ago there was what seemed a small bowlful of jelly in her pad - over the course of the day it returned to a watery blood. Similar experience early am but to a lesser extent. Dr came to introduce herself and fact I called about blood and dose increased to four times. Again, says balancing act with blood thinner. She is also going to contact oncologist. Any insight/info/experiences much appreciated. Xx
