GP called for "support" appointment before MDT results—is this normal?

Hi everyone,

My mum was recently diagnosed with G3 endometrioid carcinoma. She’s had her scans, and her case was discussed at the MDT this past Monday. The hospital nurse told us we likely wouldn't have a follow-up appointment until late December or January to discuss the full results and plan.

However, her GP called this morning to book an appointment specifically to discuss "support." This will happen before we see the oncology team.

My mum is now panicking, thinking the GP has seen the MDT results and that the news must be the "worst-case scenario." Has anyone else experienced this? Is it normal for a GP to reach out for support before the hospital explains the full picture, or is it possible the GP is the one who will deliver the MDT findings?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Christmas wishes to all

  • Hi Supportformum

    Welcome to the Womb group.

I am sorry to hear of Mum's diagnosis of cancer and understand that it is a worrying time for you both.

My GP phoned me "to see if there was anything I needed" after my post op results. He was just checking in really and saying which circumstances I would need to contact the hospital and when he could be of support as my GP.

Mine wasn't worst case scenario or anything- just something my GP surgery did with cancer patients.

What normally happens after the MDT is that Mum will be called in to discuss her treatment plan and for me it was to see the surgeon who would be doing the surgery. It was about things like what the surgery would entail, getting my consent and sorting the pre op. It was also about booking the hysterectomy.

I wouldn't be unduly concerned at the moment. I know at all steps that my GP was sent results/updates. Sounds like the GP was perhaps also taking into account the festive season and is just reaching out.

  • My GP contacted me after my surgery, when my pathology results were sent to him, but before the MDT decided on the treatment plan. My surgeon had already told me the pathology results, grade/stage etc.

He too was offering support going forward and explained how the MDT would discuss next steps and whether any further tests were needed. I found it quite reassuring.

  • Like others I was contacted by my GP surgery to offer support. I look on it as a positive.

  • And sometimes it doesn't feel as if there's so many positives. It meant when I wanted something from the GP I felt empowered to speak up.

  • I think it’s great! Shows they’re really switched on and care.
