Hi everyone
We have been asked to set up a dedicated space for radiotherapy discussions. Please use this discussion thread to share your personal experiences with radiotherapy treatment, however, you are welcome to start your own discussion if you prefer.
If you need additional information and support, the Ask a Nurse section of the Community is open Monday-Friday or you can contact the Nurses and Support Advisors every day on 0808 808 00 00, email or live webchat.
If you need some help using the Online Community, email community@macmillan.org.uk or send a private message to the Moderator account.
Thank you.
I had 25 sessions of external beam radiotherapy in 2022. Being told you need radiotherapy can be daunting and I know I had lots of worries about it. Please do reach out for support if you have any questions.
Jane
I was predicted grade 1 stage 1a (and no treatment) but my stage changed to 2 after the post hysterectomy histology (grade stayed the same) and I was recommended to have adjuvant treatment of 25 x radiotherapy and 2 x brachytherapy. I had these April-June 2022 at UHS Southampton. My next check up appointment is June this year - a year since my last one. Happy to answer any questions anyone may have!
How much of your abdomen received radiation for those of you who had external radiation? Did they go above the bellybutton?
This Macmillan link describes what’s included in the pelvic area for radiotherapy: https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/treatment/types-of-treatment/radiotherapy/pelvic-radiotherapy/the-pelvic-area
Pelvic area is normally the area between hip bones however exactly where the radiotherapy is targeted is done individually. If you ask your radiotherapists they will be able to explain where the treatment is being targeted for you personally. Mine was targeted to 2 main areas and both were below belly button.
Best of luck with both. I was told not to lose much weight on chemo. I lost a bit and now it’s baaaack.
Thanks Jane. I did not get any details yet other than not internal brachytherapy. I think I have to consent before hearing that. I’m still working on the referral for the closer hospital.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
