Hello all,
I have to be at hospital for 12 today for my hysterectomy, although been told I am second on the list so likely to have to wait a few hours before I go down.
Very anxious, never had an operation, never been under GA. It didn't help that at the Drs the other day the HCA told me a horror story about hers last year but I have read so many positive stories here and I just wanted to say thank you for all the support and advice.
Good Morning StarsAndSky,
I was in your position less than 3 weeks ago. Never had an operation either, was petrified and even cried whilst getting all my Op prep done. The staff were very compassionate and understanding. I had Keyhole surgery for a full hysterectomy and I got to say I expected the worse of everything and here I am so surprised at my recovery. That was very unprofessional for someone to tell you an horror story. My advice is just keep on top of the pain relief, there are no trophy’s for braving pain. My friend went through several breast cancer Ops last year and she gave me very good advice about controlling pain and I have been very comfortable throughout. When I went to the enhanced nurse meeting her words were ‘ if you are in pain then we are not doing our job properly, we have pain relief from paracetamol to morphine and everything in between’.
I wish you all the best with your surgery today and looking forward to you posting on here in a few weeks saying how surprised you are at all the unnecessary worry you put yourself through.
Thank you so much for your reassuring and comforting words KeswickC. I'm pleased to hear how well your surgery went and your recovery so far. Yes, I will definitely take the pain relief that is need. I know, I feel like she was triggered/feeling bitter, I hope she was just trying to get me to be realistic about the risks/what could happen but I didn't appreciate it! Thank you
You’ve got this!! For me the worst bit was waiting in the day of the op- arrived at 7.30 - and didn’t go to theatre till 3.30, still surprised at how well I felt afterwards- and mine was abdominal so a bit more uncomfortable. By this time tomorrow it will be done and you’ll be starting your recovery.

my strongest recommendation through my own experience is when you are travelling home make sure someone brings you a pillow to put across your tummy to keep you comfortable and support your tummy, there will be a big void in there and your internal organs will be trying to find a new home.
Thanks Travellinggirl, oh my goodness that's a lot of waiting around!! Pleased you felt so well afterwards.
Hi I’m 5 weeks post op and mine was fine. One night stay and minimal pain.
i had mine removed robotically.
I agree take a pillow for travelling home and comfy clothes and shoes you can slip into.
you got this and you will be fine and as the others say you will be recovering from tomorrow. X
Thanks Runner54, I'm pleased you are doing so well and the op was fine. Yes I'm taking a dress and some loose leggings and tshirt (as not generally a dress person! but just in case leggings are too difficult to manage!). Thank you, yes just want to get it done, the anticipation is probably the worst bit!
Good luck, you will be fine. I was in same position, never had GA, operation etc, and mine was abdominal. For me, what got me through was conversation with anesthetist at my pre op, who said what’s difficult is giving up control, and putting your trust into others, but trust them. Everyone on the day was lovely, in the theatre one minute talking about holidays and the next waking up. Wishing you all the best
