Tomorrow is my appointment and today has been the first day where I have been so stressed. Can’t concentrate on anything.
I was supposed to be at work tomorrow before my appointment but I think that won’t be possible.
my partner says I need to look after myself and not worry about work.

the belly pain is so bad at times

I am so scared about having a biopsy or hysteroscopy while awake

sorry for being a wimp

  • Your not a wimp.

I took paracetamol and brufen before I went which helped. Mine was just like bad period pains that did pass

the nurses and consultant were all amazing at keeping my calm.

you must look after yourself and if you can stay off work before.

    thinking of you

  • Hi Georgiegirl72, I do feel for you as the whole cancer thing js frequently overwhelming. If you can’t face the procedure under local, or find you can’t tolerate the discomfort/possible pain, you can request it to be done under general anaesthetic - which would be at a later date. I tried, and also took pain relief before, but my consultant made the decision to stop as he was concerned for me, and I had it under GA a month or so later.

  • You are not a wimp and understandable to be scared this is a journey none of us wanted to be on, in my case when I had my hysteroscopy I cant say it wasn't painful as it was but the gas and air really helped I was sucking so hard its a wonder their was any left and it was over before I could process everything , the nurses where fantastic talking to me distracting me and letting me squeeze their hands, as other have said make sure you take painkillers before you go and in plenty of time for them to work and if you can take Paracetamol and Ibuprofen then do so.

They said if it was to painful then just to tell them and they would stop my friend had told me she had to stop half way and then had to wait and have it done by GA but I think the nurses can tell as well on your pain threshold , hopefully it all goes well for you and tomorrow night you will be and it will all be over .

Let us all know how you get on

  • As the others have said you are not a wimp. We have all been there and understand how you are feeling. Won’t repeat what they others have said, but wanted to wish you well for tomorrow.

  • Thank you ladies for being so kind.
    I will update tomorrow

  • Hi Georgiegirl72

You are not a wimp and its normal to feel scared.

I know I was- and for me working before I went in would not have been any good for anyone. I needed to focus on the day ahead. If you did go into work before hand you would be unlikely to be able to do much as you would naturally be thinking about what was happening later in the day.

I understand you are concerned about the hysteroscopy and biopsy. I was told it was ok to take paracetamol before hand and it did help.

When I got to my appointment the staff doing the procedure were really kind and were used to people being afraid. I did not feel rushed or pushed into anything and I knew I could ask them to stop at any point. The first part of the appointment was a chat about medical history relating to pregnancy, periods etc. The specialist nurse then explained what was going to happen. I was then asked if I was ready to go ahead.

I had to undress from the waist down and just wore a longer top. I had the option of changing into a gown if I preferred.

At each stage the nurse told me what was happening. First there was a quick internal exam to check the position of my cervix. After that she used a speculum- like when you have cervical screening. The thin instrument was then pushed through my cervix- this for me was the main painful bit but it was over in seconds. My biopsy was not done by a knife but by some long straws that sort of suction some samples out. While this was happening I had a mild period like feeling. I felt a little light headed. Once finished I had to stay on the examination couch for a bit and then helped to get up slowly. I got dressed and was taken to a recovery room to rest for a bit and was given a cup of tea and biscuits. The nurse came back to check how I was doing on to check my pad. Its a good idea to take one of your own as the hospital ones are pretty basic. I took some Always night time ones. Once the nurse was satisfied bleeding had settled I was able to go home with my friend.

I was told it was fine to take paracetamol at home if needed and was told to contact the hospital if I had any heavy bleeding or concerns. I took it easy for the rest of that day and the following one, I just felt a bit washed out.

I was told the results by one of the oncology nurses by phone around a week later. I had been given the option to come in for an appointment but preferred the phone call.

When you get there tomorrow, tell them that you are feeling nervous. I am sure they will look after you very well. During the procedure you can at anytime ask them to stop and they will. There is also the option of having it done with a GA later on.

I didn't think I would cope with mine, but I did. I am not great with hospitals.

    Good Luck for tomorrow.

  • Just a little update

i saw the consultant today and I need to have ultrasound. My ultrasound isn’t for 2 weeks.
I am slightly upset about this as had expected everything to happen today.

  • Oh sorry to hear this. Did you get the hysteroscopy out of the way?
