Pain reliever whilst waiting for op.

Hi. I am waiting on date for my operation to remove womb (Grade 1 cancer diagnosis), cervix, tubes, ovaries (have a 9cm mass on left ovary suspected as cancer), ometreum and possible some lymph nodes. It has been a few weeks since I initially went to GP and then direct to A & E following couple of episodes of severe abdominal pain. Retrospectively I realised I had a few other symptoms, but no constant or imposing pain. Now it is constant. Lower back on left hand side and some lower abdominal. Paracetamol every 6 hours helps, but as wears off. Not only is the increase worrying me as it has been so long from scans but I have been advised not to take codine to avoid getting bunged up. Would ibuprofen be suitable? Any other suggestions?
Should I be contacting hospital to advise of pain progression? Consultant has suggested my ovary/mass may have twisted and that was reason for the shorter, severe pain events - I can’t help imagining that something has now burst and cancer cells are running amuck or it is growing, spreading to my spine or something. Apologies, most of the time I have managed to stay positive and rationale, but …

  • Hi Rackelsi

I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis of cancer and I hope that you get the date for your surgery soon.

If you have a number for the hospital and can talk to someone today I would call that in the first instance.

However my feeling is that if you are in constant pain, it is a new pain and it is not responding to paracetamol at the maximum dose- it needs checking. I wonder if it is worth either calling NHS 111 or going to an urgent care/minor injuries unit near you. They could check you over, do a scan if needed and perhaps prescribe something to manage the pain.

As the consultant has already mentioned that perhaps the ovary/mass has twisted, I wonder if it has in someway moved or twisted further causing the increase in pain.

Get checked, you are not making a fuss over nothing and this is something that they would want to know about.

If you want to talk it over with a nurse first, then do give the Support Line a call.

  • Thank you Jane. I will try to give the hospital a ring - I have been referred to a larger, cancer centre where I met my consultant and am having pre-op assessment on Friday, so that one will probably the best, I expect?

  • Yes, that sounds the best one. Hope you can get sorted

  • Another poster has addressed the pain issue but I just wanted to add that the pain might possibly be coming from the ovary, rather than the womb. I have a large cyst on one ovary (benign) and it gives me a lot of pain at times.

The only way to be sure of course is to refer back to your team/GP.

You say that the cancer is grade 1, which is generally slow-growing but I would refer back to your GP, maybe get an ultrasound/other tests to be sure. It could even be an infection, so further tests might help.

I hope you get some answers very soon and good wishes.

  • Thanks. I do think ovary/mass main cause of pain.
