Biopsy results wait

Hello,

I am new here, unfortunately :(

currently being investigated for endometrial cancer following some extremely heavy abnormal bleeding and discharge and a thickened lining picked up on transvaginal scan.

I just wanted to ask, how long does it usually take between the biopsy and results?

feel like I can’t get on with my life, it’s horrible waiting.

  • So sorry Lookingafterno1, I know what you mean about putting your life on hold - that's where I am too at the moment.

My wait has been quite long really.  I had a hospital letter ten days after my intravaginal ultrasound and biopsy  (on 25th November) to say that my biopsy was insufficient and that I'd be booked in for a hysteroscopy.

First hysteroscopy on 7th December with local anaesthetic was abandoned as the consultant found polyps and said they would be better removed under a general anaesthetic ( I'd said ouch sharply when he put in the second injection of anaesthetic - and I was very worried about dealing with pain, because I'd had a bad experience with a colposcopy three years previously). So I was booked in for a hysteroscopy with general anaesthetic on 30th December (loved the pre op advice on 24th December to eat healthily, lose weight and exercise before the op...)  and I was told it would be four weeks from the 30th to get the new biopsy result by letter.  So that will be around the 28th January.  So I'm still in waiting mode here.  (Mysteriously my polyps had actually disappeared between 7th December and 30th December)

I had some post menopausal bleeding and started on the fast track referral on 18th November.. So I'm nearly at the two month mark and still waiting for results.  ( My ultrasound showed slightly thickened uterus lining of 5.7mm which is pretty thin, but not thin enough unfortunately).

Hope you get your results sooner!  (One way to sometimes find out them sooner is to have a login to your GP surgery's online medical records, because if your consultant letter is emailed to the GP, sometimes you can read it online before it gets to you via the post.  Good idea to have someone with you though when you check.)

I am trying to stay calm, but not managing terribly well all the time.  I'm going for walks because I need to look at my general fitness, and seeing friends and painting (my hobby) to take my mind off it.  I think my risk is statistically pretty low, but we always have that question on our minds, don't we?  I've been having trouble getting to sleep since this started in November, so think I'm pretty anxious in reality.  Taking comfort in knowing my friends at church are praying for me.

Am crossing everything that this second biopsy is sufficient now, and that there won't  need to be another biopsy and wait x

  • Hello! So sorry I have not seen this sooner. Bless you, what a stressful journey. I really hope you are ok. Have you had any news yet in the last few days since you posted?

  • Hello.

May I ask your age and what symptoms you had? Have you had biopsy as yet? The results are (I’ve heard) fairly quick to come back

  • Hello. I am 35. Abnormal, insanely heavy bleeding which landed me in hospital. Watery discharge. Then a thickened lining on a scan. I had the biopsy nearly 4 weeks ago and not heard back yet :(

  • To be honest, I feel like not hearing after 4 weeks is a good thing?? Have you contacted them to find out?

  • Hello!  Thank you for asking.  Not heard back yet, I've got another week to get through - do hope they haven't got a backlog of letters to get out after the holidays!

    How're you coping ? X

  • Yes, I called them and they said the results are back but with the consultant and they could not tell me any more than that.

  • Bless you. Hopefully not long. My kids are keeping me busy but my brain is still going to worse case! X

  • The waiting is so tough.  Sounds like our biopsies were a similar time?  I was told it takes a couple of weeks to get the biopsy result and then another couple of weeks on top of that to get the letter - I wish I could stop jumping out of my skin when letters land on the doormat!
