How soon is it ok to start pelvic floor exercises after hysterectomy and do they generally provide physio to help with this afterwards?

  • Hi EndoCanc, my CNS gave me a post hysterectomy physio sheet re pelvic floor exercises so I suggest you contact your hospital and ask them to email you something.

  • They don’t provide physio where I am but I know a pelvic physio who deal with most of post hysterectomy women via Racketball so I’ve been seeing her.  She gave me some basic pelvic floor exercises after week 2. (But I’m probably not a good example as I’ve had 5 days of quite heavy bleeding - that’s thankfully just subsided) - so i must have overdone something.  So I guess the moral of the story  is , yes do very very  basic pelvic floor stuff very gently and listen to your body but just be very careful in first 4 weeks as it’s still healing.  But I would be guided by a professional (I think the book they give everyone on post hysto has basic excercises post op)

  • Sorry to hear you’ve been bleeding, that doesn’t sound good.

Maybe I’ll give the pelvic floor exercises a slight delay then.

  • I wasn’t given anything. Maybe I’ll find  something online with a search.

  • I’ll try and find the page and upload photos ..

  • I would ask a pelvic physio who specialises in post hysterectomy women - I was just telling you what happened to me - I think gentle walks are the best and helps get bits to settle.

  • Here’s an NHS link which has a link for pelvic floor exercises post hysterectomy: www.nhs.uk/.../

  • Thanks for that <3

  • Can’t find the thing but I googled pelvic floor exercises post hysterectomy and there’s loads out there like this www.royaldevon.nhs.uk/.../physio_advice_after_gynae_op.pdf

  • My CNS came round to see me the morning after my op with the leaflet and basically said to do no more than a slow gentle occasional squeeze during the first couple of weeks
