How does anyone cope with the 2 week wait?!

I know the advice to keep busy but it's on my mind the whole of my waking hours.  I can't even distract myself by going to work because I work supporting cancer patients and I'm not in the right frame of mind for that.

I'm getting really quite down now.  I don't want to burden my husband and haven't told the children (adult) because this time last year I had to tell them I have CLL so I can't tell them of another possible cancer. My best friend is a Macmillan nurse so it would be like a 'busman's holiday' to be turning to her for support.

After just over 2 weeks and many phone calls I have an initial ultrasound scan tomorrow but there will be no appointment made to see the consultant until he's seen the scan result - so another week's wait for that.  It's intolerable all this waiting.  How do others cope?

  • No I haven’t seen The thread I will try to look now, thank you so much for your help.

  • Hello

You poor love. Exactly the same happened to me and I know how horrendous it was , being all psyched up and ready for the surgery, only to be sent home again.  I feel for you so much.  Now you just need to rest as much as you can, keep well hydrated, eat well and give your body every chance to get well as quickly as possible.  Many studies have shown that having surgery if you have covid can make things much more difficult for you, both at the time and during your recovery, so although it doesn’t seem like it, it’s probably a blessing in disguise that they discovered you had it before they operated, rather than just after.  I know that doesn’t feel like any consolation now though…

Hopefully you’ll get a new date very soon and you can move forward again.

    Thinking of you so much.

  • Thank you so much, I understand that and I am very thankful they found the covid. I thought it was stress but felt worse yesterday. They are saying 8 weeks now before another date and I have asked to increase my Provera to make sure it doesn’t spread in the time I’m waiting. Did they do anything for you?

  • They didn’t offer me anything at all, but fixed another date a month ahead.  It was right at the height of the pandemic, in October 2020, and I don’t think they knew then the risks of surgery with covid, so weren’t going to leave very long before re-scheduling my op.  However I tested positive before the new date, and kept testing positive until early December (again, they didn’t know then that some people test positive for a long time, but that the virus isn’t active or infectious).  I finally had my surgery on December 2nd and was still the same stage and grade that they had originally said!  Nothing had changed - and all the time I was waiting they kept reassuring me that endometrial cancer was generally slow growing .  They even said it would be ok if I had to wait 6 months!

Try not to worry - your team will know what’s best for you and will make sure they do everything that’s needed while you’re waiting.  I think we sometimes forget that they’re all on our side and working for the best possible outcomes for us.

I hope you are tucked up warm, with paracetamol and a good book/tv prog, and that you are being well looked after.  Use this time to get as well as you can.  It seems a long time to wait, but it’ll pass quickly.

    Sending lots of love xx
