How does anyone cope with the 2 week wait?!

I know the advice to keep busy but it's on my mind the whole of my waking hours.  I can't even distract myself by going to work because I work supporting cancer patients and I'm not in the right frame of mind for that.

I'm getting really quite down now.  I don't want to burden my husband and haven't told the children (adult) because this time last year I had to tell them I have CLL so I can't tell them of another possible cancer. My best friend is a Macmillan nurse so it would be like a 'busman's holiday' to be turning to her for support.

After just over 2 weeks and many phone calls I have an initial ultrasound scan tomorrow but there will be no appointment made to see the consultant until he's seen the scan result - so another week's wait for that.  It's intolerable all this waiting.  How do others cope?

  • Thank you, I will share with you my decision and reasons.

  • Green3322- you will get through it, the hardest part is waiting but try to keep yourself distracted if you can. I know that’s easier said than done but focus on getting through one day at a time. Try not to think about next week or longer term, celebrate your home being clean or cook some nice food and focus on the small details, how does it taste, how long did it take to cook and ingredients go int here and it’s helps for a short while. Thinking of you as it’s not easy.

  • Hi . I had hysterectomy but without oopherectomy this year. I had not been staged before I had my surgery as I had only had a polyp with pre-cancer removed. I did a lot of reading around when coming to my decision and found an article on British Medical Journal (so a reputable source) which stated that early removal of ovaries comes with increased risk of Breast Cancer, Bowel Cancer, Heart Disease and Dementia.

My mother in law had a hysterectomy with early ovary removal and has had two out of those four since - breast and heart disease. I asked my consultant if my research was correct and he confirmed. If there were any cells in my tubes I would have immediately had a second operation. However 1a is self contained.

Here is the article. It's not a very fun read!

I am currently being offered an ultrasound every 6 months and consultant appt every 4 months for observation. I feel very looked after. I have had a full CT scan also and currently happy with my decision. Any changes or I want them out I have been told an oopherectomy is not a problem. Oopherectomy is a day case and two week recovery.

Only you can come to the decision but double check what your options are. It was reiterated to me that my decision wasn't just a once in a lifetime choice and wouldn't mean I couldn't just bide myself a few more years of hormones. But I have been lucky with my consultants.

  • Hi Liverpool1, it’s hard when you have different people telling you different things. I appreciate that they’re concerned about you but I’d urge you to make the decision for yourself, as it’s your body, your cancer and your life. I’d advise against using Dr Google for research as he’s so unreliable he needs to be struck off! For me I’d likely have been guided by my consultant but that’s because I liked him and trusted him. Do you have the contact details for your CNS nurses? I’m sure they’d be happy to chat about it with you, or you could call the Macmillan helpline and speak to someone medical. Bless you.

  • Hi all, I have received a date for my operation which is Thursday this week and have decided to remove the ovaries. I’m very scared as only found out today but I would rather it be quick and over. Unfortunately it’s going to be abdominal not keyhole. I am extremely scared but at the same time I just want the cancer gone.

  • Hi Liverpool1, well done for making your decision and really glad that you don’t have to wait too long! Have you seen the thread about what to pack in your overnight bag? Or my one about my hysterectomy diary?

  • Hi Liverpool1 hope op goes well and wishing you a very speedy recovery x
