Hello, I had a transvaginal ultrasound last Friday afternoon and GP call on Monday morning, the scan showed my endometrium has doubled in thickness since my scan last year from 7mm to 14mm. I am 56 years old and because I've been bleeding and spotting I'm not sure whether I'm still perimenopausal or post menopause. I am petrified about having the hysteroscopy awake as years ago I had one and they couldn't do it as it hurt so much they have me a general anaesthetic. Has everyone managed this whilst awake? maybe things have improved if I ask for a general I'm sure it will delay my treatment as am on a two week referral. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you
If you’re that anxious, you can opt to have it under GA though they may want to see you first. I had a failed hysteroscopy (consultant deemed it too painful for me and was unwilling to continue) and I was then referred for one under GA, but was still prioritised as on 2 week pathway. I think the delay was no more than about 2 weeks.
Thank you for the re assurance on the delay that makes me feel better.
I had my baby by caesarean section, I've been trying to get through all day to change it but no answer so if no joy tomorrow I'll turn up for the appointment and ask for it to be re scheduled but I hope I get through as someone else could have that appointment. I'm glad you were OK with your procedure.
Hi Jane,
My gynecologist tried realy hard to do my hysteroscopy and failed even tho it was very painful I kept asking her to try again but it wasn't possible and I've had 4 kids all vaginal deliveries, under GA it was a total breeze lol. Good luck.

I tried to cancel mine to opt for GA but was told I’d need to attend anyway and have it booked by GA then after chatting with the consultant.
Hi
I had mine with local anaesthetic and it was a bit uncomfortable and I did say an' Ouch ' at one point as I felt something sharp so don't know if they hadn't left enough time for the local anaesthetic to kick in and abdomen felt bit sore for couple of days but it other than that it was fine.
I think if you've had children delivered vaginally....it helps the procedure.
Take care xx
I was terrified of having mine done as I had googled the procedure beforehand!! I was told to take 2 painkillers an hour beforehand (I took extra strength nurofen lol). I was told throughout that I could stop the procedure at any point if I found it painful. I found it uncomfortable, but it was bearable for me. However, my Fallopian tubes had closed so they injected an anaesthetic to numb the area. I felt a sharp pain with the injection (they asked if I wanted it first and pre-warned me what to expect and also told me exactly when it would happen), but after that I didn’t feel anything. I was so anxious to get it done that day as I didn’t want to have to repeat it under ga, but they said that some ladies find it unbearable and they kept asking throughout if I was ok. I was told I could come back the following week for a general if I stopped the procedure at any point.. They were honestly really nice throughout and I was relieved to get mine done, but I was also reassured knowing I had the option of a general if I needed it and that I could stop at any point if the pain became unbearable for me. If you do decide to go through with it you will be in control throughout to stay stop. The local definitely helped by numbing the area (not sure if you had that last time, but worth a mention if you didn’t). I had a consultation beforehand and was able to talk about my anxiety and they were very understanding. They gave me the option there and then for a general, but I opted to give it go without first.
Though I’d tried to opt for GA from the start, they said I had to attend the appointment anyway and just tell him I wanted to be referred to have it under GA. On the day I said that but as he and the nurse were so nice and understanding, and said if it was too much I could say stop at any time, I then said I’d like to try. They were lovely with me, and the consultant asked me if I’d like the screen turned towards me so I could see what he was doing and what the camera was looking at. Things looked very tight by my cervix and I had the local anaesthetic injection. But even with that (and having had painkillers myself an hour before), attempts to get the camera through were very painful, as I’m well past menopause and my cervix was tightly closed, and after two tries he said he wasn’t willing to continue as he didn’t want it to be a bad experience for me (and that I might faint). I was disappointed and burst into tears, because I so wanted it done, but I then waited for the pre op assessment and the hysteroscopy under GA a couple of weeks or so later, and that was an absolute breeze.
Hi Jane66 I'd think if you'd have to have had a hysteroscopy years ago done under GA and your baby was delivered by by caesarean it'd be a good idea to have the procedure done under GA or Epidural like I had.
Hugs, Barb xx
