Hi,

I’m now two weeks post hysterectomy surgery  and I thought I would share some practical bits and bobs which may be useful for anyone who is due to have surgery.

Things to take into hospital:

  • Large pants!
  • Comfortable night shirts
  • Slippers
  • Dressing gown
  • Phone bank charger
  • Mints / throat lozenges - soothing for throat post op
  • Mouthwash - easier than brushing post op
  • Facial water spray  - just really refreshing post op
  • Plastic bags to put used clothes
  • Soft waisted leggings for coming home

Things which have been useful since home:

  • Honey added to hot water to smooth sore throat
  • Straws for drinking
  • A gel cushion to make sitting more comfortable
  • Extra pillows for bed - makes it  easier when sleeping sitting up
  • A Helping hand grabber to prevent reaching / help getting dressed
  • Patience when putting surgical stockings on!!

I had my surgery cancelled 5 times and waited 4 months for my surgery due to Covid. I’m so relieved to have had it done now and on the road to recovery. Sending well wishes to all x

  • Hi and welcome to our little corner of the community where you'll find a lovely group of supportive ladies. Your list is very helpful to others, the main thing we all agree on are the Bridget Jones's. In fact since I've used them wouldn't go back to the old types! Hope your op went smoothly and I'm sure you're waiting for your histology results - an anxious time.

When you have a minute, it would be helpful if you could pop something about your  journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. (It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself.) To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can update it at any time and if you're not sure what you should write have a quick look at mine by clicking on my username.

It’s always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear. It's free to call on 0808 808 00 00  8am to 8pm, 7 days a week. Have a look to see what is available by Clicking here .

There is also an Ask an Expert section, but you should allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

To find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers can be found on our Online Information and Support Section

Sending you welcoming hugs, B xx

I’m still in hospital after my hysterectomy. Wondering how I will manage my socks at home on my own. Very difficult for staff here.

  • Hi Might be a good idea to contact your GP surgery and arrange for a district nurse to visit. There's no way in a million years I could get TEDs stockings on alone. My hubby had a hard enough time putting them on for me!

    Hope you're making good progress.

    Big hugs, Barb xx Hugging

    Hi Barb

I came in on Friday but op was delayed until afternoon as Covid results hadn’t come through. Another done here. All ok so op happened late afternoon.
woke in recovery 6 hrs after arrived there.
back on ward discovered I had catheter and drain. Didn’t surface till Saturday. Had shower with assistance. Sunday a.m. woke with chest pain- ECG showed all ok poss trapped wind. Strong pain meds but needed top ups. Only myself and one other patient in our ward. We were ok on Saturday but not so good on Sunday. Catheter out but drain I and leaked a bit. Other dressings removed.
Monday physio took me for walk. Ok. But v tired after little effort. Another shower. Felt abdominal pain. Poss trapped wind. While urinating after removal of catheter ok no bowel movement yet. Been taking peppermint tea.
    strength of painkillers reduced.
Tuesday. Drain removed. Virtually painlessly!  Walking as instructed by consultant. Resting after each walk. Physio took me to do stairs. Ok.
still no bowel action - peptic and fybogel prescribed.
    Pain much better

  • Welcome, welcome Blush

may I also add peppermint (sweets, tea or even cordial) plus a glass or 2 even of full sugar lemonade. Allow it to go flat, the fizz will make the wind pain worse, it helps you to bring the trapped gas up plus a quick sugar rush to reduce nausea. I swore by it Blush

  • Oh yes, I forgot the peppermint. I’ve found Holland and Barrett Peppermint capsules really useful :)
