First appointment post surgery

I had a laparoscopic hysterectomy two weeks ago and have an appointment at the end of this week for a check up at the hospital. I’ve already spoken to my nurse who told me that the pathology report showed that the cancer was at an early stage so I won’t need further treatment, just monitoring. What can I expect at this appointment? Will they need to do an internal to check how things are healing? Thanks.

  • Hi Florrie,

An internal after 2 weeks seems a bit early, but who knows? I had one after 6 weeks and was a bit apprehensive, but it was fine. If you need no further treatment they may just be telling you that, and having a general chat. My consultant told me what to look out for in a recurrence, and gave me a high five to celebrate no more treatment!!!! She seemed highly delighted to have sorted me out. She said she often gets patients too late to help. xxx

  • Hi . That's great news to hear you need no more treatment, such a relief. I had a brief internal exam 6 weeks after my op as I was starting Brachytherapy so 2 weeks does seem a bit quick.

Don't forget to take a notebook as none of us remember what we're told. Come back and let us know how you get on.

  • Hello

My first appointment after surgery was after four weeks.  The surgeon just gave me the histology results and asked how I was feeling.  He gave me the opportunity to ask questions, but as I’d convinced myself the news was going to be bad, I had only thought of questions relating to further treatment!  The news was good, no further treatment required, like you, but I hadn’t thought of any questions I might have relating to that!  It might be worth writing anything down that you might want to ask, so you’re not caught on the hop!  They didn’t do an internal check at all.

So pleased your news is good.
    Take care.

  • Hi FlorrieMcWorrie, I hope it's all going well for you. From what I remember, my post-op appointment was about 3 weeks after surgery (TLH and BSO). There was a female doctor who I hadn't met before, and a female medical student.  They were so nice. I had no pre-warning of my histology results so I was full of apprehension but the doc asked how I was, then told me I don't need any more treatment. I asked please could she examine me as I wanted that reassurance that I was healing up ok inside (and yes, I was ok). I had a couple of questions for her concerning my recovery.  A friend came to meet me at the hospital - the only time I had anyone with me - and after my appointment I had to sit with a coffee for half an hour or so to let the good news sink in.  When you have been worried for a long time, it takes a while to get out of that mindset.

    Good luck for your appointment.
