I had a WLE for VIN 2/3 just over 5 weeks ago. They removed quite a bit of skin (weren't able to remove it all unfortunately). My incision was quite large and difficult to stitch, so inevitably my stitches burst a couple of days after surgery. Since then I've had two infections and been on 3 courses of antibiotics. My wound just isn't healing and is still so painful. I follow all guidelines regarding peri bottle after going to the loo, patting dry with soft cotton dry wipes, no soaps/fragrances, etc, air drying, etc. but nothing is helping. I see the nurse at my GP twice a week, every week for a wound check, and actually seeing the tissue viability clinic nurse next week. I've been using Prontosan wash and wound gel (prescribed by the tissue viability clinic), which doesn't seem to be making much difference. Has anyone else struggled so much with their wound not healing? Any magical advice anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. I've read about medical manuka honey, but honestly I'm so scared to put anything on it, for fear of making it worse. I am just so sad and exhausted that it is taking so long, I really thought my recovery would be much further along by now. I'm seeing my consultant in 2 weeks time to discuss my results and possible need for further treatment.
Hi
I had a WLE 3 years ago for cancer and my surgeon also removed quite a lot of skin. I found using a hand held shower head after going to the loo was better and then patting dry with absorbent wipes really helped. Also just spraying the warm water to the area helped. I was also given after my operation antibiotics as a precaution against getting an infection did they not give you any after your operation? Whilst indoors I just wore t shirt nightdresses to ensure I was getting as much air as possible to the wounds. Keep taking your pain killers. I never used any soap for the first 6 weeks and then I used simple shower gel but did not use it in that area just kept to the warm water.
I am sorry sorry you are feeling exhausted and sad, maybe some other members of this group will be able to give you more information on what helped them. I was lucky with this operation and I did not have any problems, mind started when I had some lymph nodes removed and ended up with lymphoedema and a fat fracture!
Wishing you all the best and hopefully some ladies on here will be able to give some advice plus your consultant should be able to help you.
Hi OwieBowie,
Hopefully by now you will have got some good advice from your medical team & are on the mend, but if not ...
I had vulva cancer radiotherapy treatment in 2023. My cancer was too big to be operated on, so they could only give me intensive radiotherapy which was really tough to go through, but I'm glad to say has been successful so far. I'm now on 6 month check up's
I know my case is different, but I was in a terrible state after treatment, so sore & painful. I used Medihoney which was given to me at the hospital by the lovely MacMillan nurse& it worked wonders.
I would highly recommend it to anyone having issues with healing 'down there', it's worth a try.
Good luck with the healing process.
